SOURCE: 98 Ford Explorer won't move in reverse

Sometimes it may just be the fluid level, if you have drive , drive it around the block a few times, then park it on level ground and hold the brake and go through all the gears slowley, two times. put it in park, open the hood and check the fluid level, the dip stick in the back by the fire wall, take it out and clean it, read the stick. SOME need to be checked in Nutral, if this is the case do so but be carefull that the truck has stopped moving when put in nutral!!! if it is low only put in the right fluid, and a little at a time, while it is still running DO NOT OVER FILL !!!!!!!! Also sometimes it is a SENSOR problem, and in most cases not to hard or costly to replace.

SOURCE: my ford explorer reverse do not work

change the fluid and filter in the transmission ASAP and that should take care of your problem. if you drive it too long like that you may not be able to save it.

SOURCE: Location of Speed Sensor 1998 Ford Explorer XLT

polarcycle is right but there is a speed sensor on the drivers side top of the trans. toward the tail shaft or transfer case. there is as well a sensor inside the trans. itself that is mounted on the web. behind the overdrive band and drum.

How can I get 1999 Ford explorer to go in reverse-stck

-Check linkage (The cable that from the shift handle to the safety
switch on the transmission. It might be too loose, so it can't shift
to reach the reverse position.)
-If it's good then new transmission.

Good luck

1998 ford explorer 4wd no reverse gear, what could be the cause

It is a transmission problem. Had the same problem a few years ago and had to have the transmission rebuilt. I put it off for a while by not parking where I had to back up and if I had no choice, I put it in neutral and was pushed backwards until I could find the right person and price to get it fixed! Good luck.

1998 ford explorer runs fine in drive but in reverse engine only revs as if it were in neutral. Is it the shift cable or the transmission?

to make sure which one disconnect the cable and with your hand click all the way to the front, start the engine have someone in the vehicle with the parking brake on and their foot on the brake the manually put it in reverse, if still no reverse its the transmission.

My ford explorer 1998 won't go in reverse. I have transmission fluid in it.

My 1988 Explorer would not go in reverse either after the trans was just rebuilt about a year before. Turned out it was the transfer case. Unfortunately it cost as much as getting the trans rebuilt. I thought the transfer case was just for the 4 wheel drive but it has something to do with the reverse as well believe it or not. Hope that helps.

98 ford explorer will drive but you put in in reverse will not go

It is possible that the shift linkage is out of adjustment and is going into neutral and not making it to Reverse, try moving the gear selector slowly from park, through reverse to Neutral, and see if it will go into reverse somwhere in between. If this does not work ,you may have Reverse gear failure, a common problem with explorer/ranger transmissions. unfortunatly it requires rebuilding the transmission

No reverse..1998 exporer sport 2 door 4x4 sohc v6 auto

your transmission part number for a motocraft rebuilt trans would be TRM1341, as far as they list it the transmission was only for that year, meaning you would need to find another 1998 explorer or 1998 mercury mountaineer in order to replace your trans. hope this helps :)
