Question about Craftsman Garden

1 Answer

Engine will only run on 1/2 Choke

Replaced the carburetor (Walbro WT618) with NOS purchased on eBay. At the same time put in new tank filter, carb gasket, and new fuel lines. Engine started after much priming but will only run on 1/2 choke. When you go to "run" the rpm increases momentarily and then the engine quits. The High Speed adjustment screw is open 1 1/2 turns and the plastic cap is on the Idle screw so only turns about 1/8th turn. Plug is new, has good spark, but engine is putting out poor power with but about 1/2 the rpm needed to trim properly. Any thoughts before I throw it into the dumpster and go buy a Stihl? Thanks.

    John,

Thanks for your response.  The exhaust port had very little carbon as well as the muffler / spark arrestor.  Cleaned them anyway and then did a compression check.  It's only putting out 65 psi.  I assume that's about 1/2 of what it should be, but I can't find out from anyone at Sears what it should be and it's not in the Operator's Manual.  I've asked the question on managemyhome.com.  Possibly someone there can tell me what it should be.  OR, if you know, could you share what the min / max compression should be for this unit (Craftsman model 358.795560).Thanks

Hello edv40026:

Have you Checked the Exhaust Port and Muffler for Restriction?
From your Description it Sounds like the Exhaust Port or Muffler is Restricted with Carbon Deposits, the Carburetor Metering Pump Actuator Gap is Incorrect or the Compression is Low (Worn Rings/Cylinder).
>>The Following is a Basic Instruction File for Doing a Diagnostic on the Engine for this Problem. Any Input is Appreciated.
>>**Remove the Muffler and Make Sure the Exhaust Port is Clear.
>>If it is, then Try to Start the engine with the Muffler Off.
>>If it Starts and Runs Properly, then Clean the Spark Arrestor Screen in the Muffler or Replace the Muffler if Required.

Is the Fuel Line from the Fuel Filter Staying Full of Fuel?
The Carburetor Metering Jet Actuator is Set so the Pump Diaphram Dowl is Just Touching the Actuator Arm. These Components are Located Under the Cover with 4 Small Screws Holdong it to the Carburetor Body.
Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance.
Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Be Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck

    Hello Again edv40026:

    >>You are Correct.

    >>The Compression is 1/2 of what it Should be.

    >>Any Less than 80 to 90psi and an Engine will Not Run and Between 85 and 100psi, the Engine May Run but do so Poorly or Idle Rought and have Power Loss.

Motor will start but I have to manually hold the choke open until it warms up otherwise choke closes on its own

Yes this is the semi automated startup process. If the fuel is bad(old) or the carburetor has residue restricting the fuel passages the engine will run lean requiring some enrichment.(choke) I suspect that the engine may be hunting when warm. Use carburetor cleaner along with a fuel stabilizer.

Check/replace the fuel filter.

Empty fuel tank and purchase some no ethanol from home supply running the engine will assist in cleaning the passages. When engine is running close the choke a fuel times to give the engine a poor mans clean out, Avoid disassemble of the carb with out having technical compliance.(these are delicate and susceptible to contamination).

Never leave fuel in the engine when in storage. Ethanol gums up the fuel passages.

Hope this helps?

Ryobi 410 mini tiller w/Walbro WT149A primer bulb won't prime. New bulb, new fuel lines, hooked up right, carb cleaned. Been sitting for several years.Runs when fuel is pumped into the fuel inlet.

hello sir, my machine will only start when pumping primmer bulb or squirting fluid in the carburetor than stops. the fuel line has broken off, in most small carburetors this is a ongoing problem.old fuel will crystallize when left in tank for a long time.plugging up ports, fuel lines, small screen in carburetor.fuel lines will dissolve clogging carb.this is why it will run when the choke is on creating a vacuum to where there is fuel forced in the carb to rum, also the gas will evaporate leaving the oil behind clogging up carb.the thing to do is remove carb. and clean out, replacing gaskets or fuel line if necessary.use carb cleaner to clean out carb.make sure to make note where fuel line go.the fuel filter broke off of fuel line letting debris get in carb plugging it up.the muffler is known to clog up a lot on these machines where they want run. the compression should be 60 to 120 lbs any thing below 60 is junk. when adjusting the carb screws turn in all the way than turnout 1 1/4 turns turn in slow until machine runs also you need to check for spark by removing plug and grounding against engine to check spark, ok.a new spark plug would be a good ideal too , if you are going to make these repairs use new fuel line and filter, hope this helps, any comments welcome, thank you, !!

Poulin p3314 gas runs out carb

Set the H and L jet screws CW to stops (lightly), then CCW 1-3/4 turns each. This is a basic setting and both need to be turned CW somewhat when the engine runs. Recheck the lower chamber in the carburetor for correct installation of the needle, seat, spring, fulcrum, and diaphragm. Go to: www.drystacked.com for a detailed look at Walbro brand carburetors. Even if you do not have a Walbro carburetor, the principles are much the same. Make sure the fuel tank vent is open.

Poulan saw wont run

Clean the muffler spark arrestor screen and check the cylinder port for carbon build-up at the upper edge. Try presetting both carburetor H and L adjustments (from lightly CW stops) 1-1/2 turns CCW each. Start the engine and allow to warm up. Pull the throttle wide open and adjust H CW until the engine speed increases, but still 4-stroking. Correct setting is when the engine 4-strokes, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Allow to idle and adjust L for smoother running, yet allows the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Set idle speed to keep the engine running, but doesn't try to move the chain. You may have to look closer at your carburetor if the above doesn't help. Go to:
http://www.drystacked.com
for an excellent article (but poor pix) on Walbro carburetors, but related to most all 2-stroke carburetors. Hope this helps!
