Question about Apple PowerPC G5 Mac Desktop

1 Answer

I have already bought a replacement drive and it's working just fine. I'm now trying to retrieve the data on the old drive. no luck in the disk utility for repair (i figured). I used a demo of Data Rescue II v.1.2.2. and it found data on the drive (currently have it in slot B) and recovered a small data file from it successfully!! Can i do this with out having to buy this program? I don't have extra money for it :( but i really need that data (I'm a musician and all my previous work is on that drive!). Thanks for ANY type of feedback!

When you try to write a block of data onto the disk-drive, a CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) value is calculated, based on the values of the bits of the data. Then, both your data and the CRC are written to the disk-drive. When you read that block of data, the CRC is also read from the disk, and the CRC is recalculated, based on the data that was read from the disk.

If the "new" CRC does not match the "old" CRC, then your block of data has been corrupted,
i.e,. the disk-drive is malfunctioning.

just long-enough to retrieve and copy all your files to a new disk-drive.

Disk asking for format when trying to open

Do you have critical data on it? Most likely something has gotten corrupted. There is software you can get for trying to retrieve the data though more then likely not all could be retrieved. Your best bet is to format it and see if it will work from there. If the problem persists the unit is defective and should be replaced a 2gb drive can be bought for about 6$.
Thank you,

Can't be certain what's wrong with your old one, but for the price of a new drive these days, I'd say goodbye to all the data on the old one and replace it. By all means, try connecting your old one as a slave and getting the data off it..... If the drive is broken, be aware a professional data retrieval companies will charge a fee for trying to recover data.

You maybe able to retrieve data from this hard drive by connecting it to an USB hard drive adapter. Then plug this adapter into a working computer's USB port. If the hard drive is OK then this computer will see the adapter as an external hard drive and you can open the folders and files and copy them to the computer's hard drive or to a USB flash drive.

SATA hard disc compatibility

Actually, there are two good reasons not to swap that drive into the new laptop,

First, you never want to boot from or install software to a drive you're trying to recover as everything you do to/with the drive runs the risk of causing further damage.

Second even if it weren't for the damage, you simply aren't likely to have the right drivers unless both laptops are the exact same model.

My suggestion is just get the new laptop you want, then attach the damaged drive with the enclosure to the new laptop then run your recovery software. If that doesn't work, you will likely need the help of a Pro.

Try Armor-IT Data Recovery, they are listed in the FixYa database and service clients from all over North and South America.

Hope this helps FixYa,

You can't retrieve data from those disks on whatever computer you're using it on. It apparently doesn't support the same format that you used save the data to the disks initially. I don't know what you can do, other than just trying the disks on any computer you can find that has a floppy disk drive until something works. Personally, I absolutely hate all the formats there are for removable disks. I have problems just like that with CDs all the time.
Well, good luck.

Lexar Jumpdrive Secure II problem

the directory is corrupted.
when your computer accesses the drive, it knows some things, like how big it was.
but it does not know where the data is.
it does not see anything that tells it what is on the drive, thus the empty window.
not a serviceable unit if the mfg will not give you a fix it program.
sorry for the news.

No Power!

Hi, A couple of possibilities: 1. The drive is at fault; 2. The USB cable is at fault; 3. The USB port of your Mac is at fault. Things you can try: 1. Test the drive in another Mac; 2. Replace the USB cable. Things you can do to try and retrieve the data: 1. Use Data Recovery software compatible with Mac; 2. Check with Lacie website and find out if there are any utilities that can be used to repair/retrieve your Big Disk http://www.lacie.com/us/support/drivers/index.htm?id=10007 Hope you get an idea and things work out for you. Good luck and kind regards.
