-   while watching a DVD - RW the DVD ejected the disk and displayed a U61 Error on the Panasonic DMR-ES35V-   jjjjimjimjim

-   I was recording on DVD. The recording stopped and a message said there might be problem with the disc. The disc ejected, I took it out and pressed the button to close but it wouldn't close. U61 came up so I pressed the power button to turn the DVD player off and it wouldn't turn off. When I would press the button to close the disc holder "Hello" came up and the disc holder still wouldn't close.

Dec 20, 2007

-   After a recent ice storm which caused the power to go out five times in rapid succession, I turned on my DVD player-recorder. It said "HELLO" and then indicated "U61" after which I heard a beeping and clunking sound coming from where the DVD had been inserted. A message then flashed on my screen indicating that the reset had failed and I was to press enter to open the door and power down the unit. Upon pressing enter, the machine indicated "PLEASE WAIT", then ejected the DVD, and powered down with the message "BYE". I have been unable to use the machine since. I tried disconnecting from the power cord and then reconnecting but to no avail.-   twalker742

UMM the DVD top lid uses FOUR screws. The entire DVD drive is bolted to the chassis with 3 screws.

I have the same problem (same error # same model of DVR).

I noticed it happened after I left a DVD in play mode and paused for a long time.

I saw a message on the Internet that error U61 can mean that the lens is unable to move (return to its normal position).

The Internet message said that person unpluged everything, then opened the cover to the DMR-ES15 (3 screws) and gently pushed the DVD head back towards the rear of the DMR-ES15.

I assume that would void his warranty, but I am considering trying it since the time to have it repaired versus the replacement cost makes the possibility of a "self-repair" attractive.

Here is part of that actual Internet message. I hope it helps you:

Yesterday, my DMR-ES15 started to malfunction, giving me the error U61.

No matter how many times I tried to press Enter, and Power On, the machine
kept re-booting with the error U61. I noticed that the drive was making some noises as if the Read head was not able to park properly.
So I decided to open up the unit and find out why.

I took out the 3 screws holding the DVD drive top in place. And then moved
the drive head mechanism back (pushed it towards the back of the unit).

I then plugged the power in, turned it on, and amazingly there was no more U61 error.

I test the unit this morning again and everything seems to work properly again!

I watched a movie removed the disc and put in a DVD RW disc to watch something I had recorded. It come up with the error. The tray opened and an on screen message told me to press the enter button then press power on. On the DVD display it just kept flashing please wait for about five minutes. Then u61 came up. The tv showed the same instruction and to call support if it did not reset. This has already been in for repair under warranty for same problem. The unit is less than 18 months old.
