    Thanks for the quick reply.

Please explain further what this will do and how to install it, never used a bypass harness before. Where does it tie into the system?

Yes - your vehicle has a factory amplifier.
You will need a bypass harness.

You must locate the factory amplifier (usually in the cargo area behind a panel - instruction sheet will give exact location).

You unplug the input to the amplifier and plug into the bypass harness for power, ground, remote, illumination etc.

The other plug comes from the OUTPUT side plug of the amplifier (the side going out to the vehicles speakers).

Then both harnesses run back to the radio opening and you attach the ends to your new aftermarket radio's harness.

You are essentially jumpering out the amplifier. Most CAR amplifier bypass harnesses are less than 12" long - however since your amplifier is located in the rear - this one is 204".

    From Metra:

Many vehicles today are already equiped with factory amplifiers. When upgrading to an aftermarket radio, integration with these premium sound amplifiers is not always the best choice, or in some cases, not even possible. A wise alternative is to bypass. Most factory amplifiers are six or more channels, so Metra's bypass harnesses are designed with 17-foot speaker wires connecting to the original amplifiers outputs, allowing the installer to run one simple cable to anywhere in the vehicle, either the dash or a new amplifier. Most Metra bypass harnesses include an instruction manual giving factory amplifier location and listing special color codes.

Your 6 speaker system requires this harness.

Im here if you need more clarification.

try behind the glovebox - i forgot that it is a harness for many applications - and the caddy amps are in the trunk.

CLICK HERE for the wiring diagram if you want to attempt your own "bypass"

ALSO - THIS FORUM seems helpful in bypassing the amplifier without the harness - however you will lose Factory Chimes and Onstar if you dont use the harness.

Read through it, and if you have additional questions let me know!!

    Thanks For Using FixYa!!

I have a Kenwood 6140 installed in my Corvette Coupe. I have everything installed but the sound doesn't sound right. It lacks something and I'm thinking that the subs aren't on! Could this be my problem...

Normally if you have a factory ampped system and you remove the factory headunit you lose things like the factory sub. There are only 4 outputs on an aftermarket sub. In order to make your subs work you will need an aftermarket amp.

This is most likely an amplified factory system. These usually dont' work with aftermarket radios as they use a common ground for the amps in the speakers. Unless you get a specific wiring harness for this system, your best bet is to install new speakers and wiring all around.

I want a great sound system in my van. what do you advice and how much will it cost?

go pioneer, best bang for your buck. you'll prolly wanna buy a headunit, 4 componant speakers, one 10in sub, one 4 channel 500watt amp, sub box, and wiring. pricing depends on how high end you go i recommend:

Headunit: Pioneer, price depends on model, a nice one=120-150, you'll prolly need a dash kit so it'll fit your van, wal-mart like 15$, and also a wiring harness to plug into your factory wires, again wal-mart like 7$

Speakers: depends on the van, buy speakers that are the same size as your factory so changing them'll be easy. Buy pioneer, that'll handle about 60-70 watts RMS. you'll prolly pay about 120 for a pair.

Sub:Pioneer ts-w257d4 60$

Amp: Alpine mrp-f550 210$

Sub Box: Scosche, available at wal-mart, 30$

Wiring Kit: Schosche, Also at wal-mart, 30-35$

Pricing on sub, amp, headunit, and speakers comes from, another good website is So a grand total for materials is gonna be 775-850 after shipping on online bought stuff.( has free shipping on orders over 100$)
If you pay for installation then you're prolly lookin another 150-250 bucks. it ain't cheap but your system will sound KICK ***!!!

Installing subs, how to use rc converter

from the rc converter i connected to the rear speakers taking both positive (left and right) to the positive on the factory speakers, then done the same with the negative (left and right) to the negative of the factory speakers. i connected with a quick connect. then from the converter to the amp using rc's. since my battery is in the trunk, the only wire i had to run through the car is the remote wire from the radio to my amp and then my subs to my amp.

Install two 10" subwoofers in a 2002 grand am monsoon.

The only way to Correctly do this is to Run an External Amp for your Subs. If you continuously run the Subs off of the Factory Amp It will Ruin the Subs and the Amp Eventually. This way you can still Connect the Rear speakers as they need to be. Please Rate my solution, I need all the Help that I can Get! Thanks!
