Rebuilt a 2010 gas the timing marks on the cam and crank are dot to dot and number one isn't at top dead center. Is this right?

Crank and flywhleel timing marks

You can find the timing mark on the end of a crank shaft by looking for an indented dot which marks top dead center.
A flywheel is balanced and does not need a mark. However if the wheel you refer to is a cam gear (one or two gears depending on how many cam shafts your engine has) look for 2 dots with a tooth grove between the two dots. A matching drive gear will have a single dot aligned with a tooth on the drive gear. When put together the single tooth marked on the drive gear must fall into the grove marked the the 2 dots on the cam gears.

If you are just trying to time an engine, the belt drive pulley mounted to the crank shaft will have a single indented line. The line can get filled with dirt so you can't see it. Wipe it clean and fill with grove with something to highlight the groove, as with a white or yellow crayon or a dob of bright paint. Associated with the belt drive pulley, there should be a metal plate with line marks spaced on it, with 0 degrees (top dead center TDC) marked on it, When the engine is running, using a strobe light connected to your number 1 spark plug you will see where the timing mark on the belt drive pulley is compared to the metal plate with the timing marks.

Use this image to rotate both cam marks to the correct location at the top. Remove the spark plug from #1 cylinder and place a dowell or long screwdriver into the sparkplug hole. Rotate the crank to top dead center on #1 by using the marks on the front of the crank balancer AND confirming with the motion of the dowell in the cylinder (as it rests gently on the top of the piston).
Put the timing belt on and adjust the tensioner. BEFORE cranking the engine use white nail polish/whiteout to place marks on the belt, cam and crank gears. Crank and start. If it runs rough, Examine the white dots and adjust accordingly.

Finding out how to find lost cam timing mark on a 1997 volvo 960

you are in a bit of a bind. Turning the engine over will result in bent valves so do not touch the crank shaft. you have to loose off all the rockers/ cam followers even to the point of removing the cam shaft. having done that remove no1 cylinder spark plug and by the use of a thin piece of wire turn the crank until the piston reaches top dead center. find this by rocking the crank back and forward until the piston dose'n move up or down check for the crank timing mark next replace the cam shaft and position the cam lobes for no1 piston in such a position that the inlet and exhaust valves move slightly up or down when the cam is moved slightly left or right. this is called valve over lap and with the piston on top dead center means that you now have valve timing for the engine. Cam timing marks can be dot on gear to shiny link on chain or if using a belt a dot on tooth lineing up with mould mark or join on head before starting up do a compression check to prove that there are no bent valves. if you are not mechanically minded enough to attempt the valve timing method it may be cheaper in the long term to let a qualified person do the job

set the cam gear with dot at the top bottom crank gear dot at the top too that will putt the #1 pistion top dead center. ture crank 4 times both marks will line up in the same spot ! if u did it right

How do i time a 1996 3.4l dohc. cant seem to find any timing marks on cams or crank pullys

Some times the cam pulleys may not have a dot marking the cam, they may have an x marking the
cam. if unsure you can alsways do it the old way by making sure the number one cylinder is raised

all the way to the top. I usually pull the number one sparkplug, make sure the cars wheels are blocked

put it in neutral and turn the crankshaft damper untill it reaches the highest point. i will use some thin

fuel line or clear line inserted into the number one sparkplug hole so that i can mark the highest point

on the piston, this will be top dead center. good luck!

if you take off the upper belt cover and line up the top dead center timing mark the cam mark will be right on or off 180 degrees. Line up the dot on the cam with the arrow by rotating the crankshaft around till both the cam mark and the crank TDC mark line up. Now when you take off the lower cover all the marks will line up for the crank. They are usually pretty obvious, but if your are not sure at this point you can always paint your own. Just make sure when you slide the new belt on , all the timing marks line up.

crank gear dot up - cam dot down. crank dot up number 1 is top dead center gear down the vavle on number 1 is closed . dist timing is set to number 1 plug wire (rotor pionting to num. 1 terminal on cap)

Finding the timing marks is simple, it is an impression (a small arrow) on both the crank and the cam. As for the exact time set, I would refer to the owner's manual but if you are doing it off the cuff pull the number one piston top dead center, line up the rotor button with the number one piston and set crank at top dead center and cam at bottom dead center. This will be a good starting point, but the owner's manual will give you more exact instructions.

It should be top dead center on a compression stroke and all the valve are closed. Both cams have a line the lines up with marks on the valve cover. Basicly the marks on the cams both are set to point to twelve o'clock. The mark on the crank shaft pully points to 6 o'clock or strait down

Set timing after rebuild

make sure #1 is top dead center(TDC) or all the way up in the bore. Set the lower chain, use the marks dot to dot. then the cams, the intake cam has it's own mark as well as the exaust cam the marks on the cam should be strait up and down to the reflecting cam. put the chains on. Spin the engine over by hand to make sure you are right.
