Open the front cover and remove the drum and toner(cartridge) There should be a paperjam in the machine. It reads back cover open because the piece of paper is covering the sensor for the back cover.

SOURCE: Brother MFC-7220 says "close back cover" but it's closed

Have you tried this solution by joefishny:

Turn the machine around so that you are facing the back. Open the back cover. Pull down the second

smaller roller cover inside the machine. If you look closely at the second smaller cover, on the right hand side (closer the the inside of the machine), is a very thin round piece of plastic that is only half the

length of the smaller cover. There are 2 thin plastic tabs attached to either end of this round piece of

plastic. Gently shift this over so that the 2 plastic tabs can now go into the space provided for them. I had to move mine over only 1/4 inch.

Brother MFC 7220 message indicates "Close back cover". Cover is closed. Nothing seems to eliminate the problem.

Inside the back cover there is a black "rod" this is the rear sensor actuator. It should be straight with its peg fitting inside a slot on the rear cover area (and should also have a small spring on it)

MFC-7220 All-In-One Laser Printer: the back cover open message will not go away...

There is a paper jam in the machine which is blocking the sensor for the back cover.

Remoev the drum and toner (cartridge) from printer and look inside, there should be a piece of paper there, you need to remove it slowly

Mfc-7220 Back Cover Open

This one made me crazy, but I finally figured it out. Turn the machine around so that you are facing the back. Open the back cover. Pull down the second smaller roller cover inside the machine. If you look closely at the second smaller cover, on the right hand side (closer the the inside of the machine), is a very thin round piece of plastic that is only half the length of the smaller cover.
