Screen freezes up, dont know if its a video card problem or ?

I have an old pentium 4 2.8Ghz with a GeForce4 MX 4000 64mb video card and 1gb RAM...when i play a game like ragnarok after a few minutes into the game my screen just freezes up, i cant move my mouse and ctrl+alt+del doesnt work either. i tried leaving it that way and eventually my screen (monitor) would just shut off, go black (more like in standby mode because the light beside the power switch keeps blinking). sometimes it would happen while i'm surfing the net and have more than 2 sites open at a time. the ram is brand new but the video card is old, this problem also happened with my previous video card which was a GeForce FX5200 128mb. cooling is okay, i have a strong fan faced directly to the whole open side of the tower..and by the way when you touch the casing of the tower there's a little ground, a little electric shock, but not that strong...please give me some advice as to what's causing the problem and what part should i replace?

benwabnick, there are 11 programs (im not sure if program is the right word for them but there are 11 lines) and they seem to be necessary...the things under startup in msconfig are VistaDrive, avgtray, dumprep, Reader_sl, NvCpl, nwiz, NvMcTray, VisualTaskTips, YahooMessenger, ctfmon, Styler... thats all there is, and im not sure what's needed and what's not... do you think its a software related issue? i have tried reinstalling my OS already, still get the same problem

  • tiago3 May 14, 2009

thanks benwabnick, i've tried it but still hangs, the screen of the game sort of blinks black then goes back to normal then eventually the screen freezes and i cant move my mouse not even ctrl+alt+del... there are times that this problem takes a while before it happens, and sometimes it even happens when i'm only surfing the net..

  • tiago3 May 14, 2009

  • tiago3 May 14, 2009

sometimes the problem is not consistent, like now, its not happening at all...i've been running this pc for an hour already and its running perfectly...

  • tiago3 May 14, 2009

i bought my hard drive 2-3 months ago, i had this same problem with my previous video card so i replaced it with this one i am using now and it worked perfectly for like 2 months then eventually started having the same problem as my previous card... for the record the card im using now is not brand new, its actually older than the one i replaced. sorry to trouble you, its just that i've done all i know about this stuff and cant seem to figure out the problem, thats the hard thing with old computers

  • tiago3 May 14, 2009

i did not add any hardware or software recently

  • tiago3 May 14, 2009

i stated a while ago that my computer has been running for more than an hour without hanging (i havent tried playing ragnarok yet then) but once i started playing ragnarok it all of a sudden hung again after less than 5 minutes of gameplay...do you think its the video card? im sure that my ragnarok files are NOT corrupt...

Im wondering if your hard drive is starting to go bad in that computer??? Bad sectors on a hard drive can cause that. Have you added any new hardware in that computer recently?

For your internet access do you use a regular dial-up modem or high speed internet with a network card?

Is this happening on all games or just the ragnarok game?

to play this game do you need the cd in the drive?

You reinstalled the OS and still the same problem exists. maybe the virus program is interferring with the game?

Click on your start button and then click on run. In the box type in MSCONFIG and click on OK.

Go into the startup tab and then disable all of the programs in there and click on apply and then okay and let the computer restart. You will now have alot more system memory available to run the game and no chance of interference with anything running in the background. Run the game and see how it goes.

Did you go into msconfig and then into the startup and disable the programs in there that you don't need running?

Lots of times there is stuff running in the background that interferes with the way windows will run and cause lockups and slowdowns.

make sure you don't have any extra programs running in the background, that will cause weird lockups.

I strongly believe this is due to your vide card. It is either overheat, or just going bad. Get another card in and I am sure it will fix your problem.

Upgrade to more RAM...you have 1gb that is not enough at all to run games and all other programs. 2GB minimum

old Pentium 4 processor
circa 2003 , tiny HDD, and memory. old, Goodwill has 1000s parked.

well it can be many things,
did you remove all the cards first, (yes all)
does that hold up power? now?
it will beep, like that, if video car is pulled
and then pull memory, and it will give the ram missing beep codes
all this is covered in the great HP service books.,
beep codes and all
the power switch can be bad or the line cord. to wall. bad.
the power switch unplugs and you can short its 2 pins
to turn on PC< hold up now>?
hold up, means stay running,

you can strip it down, to just mobo and PSU
sure can,.
the CPU can overheat, sure can. and can be checked.
cpu fan works so is not that. im sure. and new thermal grease.

How to check the fuses on geforce4 mx440

I really dont think any Video Cards have a fuse on them that you can replace even on a video card that old.
Can I ask why you would even be looking for one?

Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz 512 MB of RAM. can i increase the memory to 1gb?

Yes pentium 4 supports 4gb of ram..
older system supports 2gb of ram..
So you can increase your memory to your suitable choice.
While for agp graphics cards xfx radeon hd launched 4650 agp graphics card with gddr2 memory so you can purchase it for graphics card needing 1gb memory..
Please rate me on fixya if i am helpful..

My computer does not see the GeForce4 MX 420 hardware. I can not install drivers for it because of this.

Try this, uninstall all your video drivers in Device Manager and shut the PC down.
Remove your MX 420 and connect the monitor back to the onboard video ( or previous card ).
Boot the PC and go into the BIOS.
Make sure that you select PCI for the graphics option in the BIOS. You are not using it at this moment, but we want it to work when you do put your MX 420 back in.
Now shut it down and put the MX 420 back in.
When you boot and get the "New Hardware found' message, just cancel it and install the MX420 drivers.

Hope this helps.

Problem with my geforce4 mx

Sounds to me like either the card is bad or you have a corrupt driver. If you remove the card will it start? then it is a bad card. If you uninstall driver either through safe mode (hold F8 at powerup before windows starts) or restore to last known working config (also F8). I suggest you go to nvidia website to download your drivers. let me know if you are still stuck, we'll work it out.

Problem with NVidia GeForce4 MX 4000.

Hi!
Your old Rage Pro is an AGP 2x, where the Nvidia is an AGP 8x.

The Nvidia is probably not compatible with your motherboard.

Also, I think Nvidia needs much more than 320 Mb ram.

That card is too old for games. I assume you only have a pci slot for graphics which is not suitable for gaming- new motherboard or pc definately needed!
