Error message: "COM Surrogate has stopped working."

COM objects are often defined in Dynamic Link Libraries (DLL files). The Program file for COM Surrogate is actually dllhost.exe that can load a DLL and make its objects available to other programs.

The COM Surrogate error message is often related to codecs and other COM objects that aren't fully compatible with Vista. These are installed by other programs. The most common culprits are DivX and Nero. The first thing you should do is upgrade to the latest versions of these to see if that fixes the problem. Another possible fix is to disable thumbnail previews in Explorer. To do that:
In Windows Explorer, click Organize, then select Folder and Search Options
Click the View tab
Check the box that says "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
Click OK
To help troubleshoot which codec(s) might be causing the problem, you can use a free tool called InstalledCodec. You can use it to disable individual codecs one at a time.
You can download it at http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/installed_codec.html

Hope that helps

Mike

If I diable com surrogate will it harm my computer

Com surrogate is a service that allows switching on the com ports. Without it, communication to your devices will stop. If you're encountering this error there is a driver problem with your com port controller and you need to install the correct drivers.

When I start a burning program my computer gives my the message COM SURROGATE DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE how can I solve this problem

This fault is caused through incompatibilities with the media. There are 3 possible solutions to your problem

1) First off download the latest xvid codec and install it and update any divx codecs you might have.

2)Disable thumbnail preveiws, goto tools tab, if using xp or the oganize tab if using vista or Windows 7, choose folder options, click on view tab and tick always show icons never thumbnails.

3)Right click on my computer and choose properties, click on advanced or advanced system settings, goto performance and click settings, select "Data Execution Prevention" and click the ADD tab, browse to C:\windows\system32\dllhost.exe, write dllhost in the file name text box and the dllhost.exe should appear click open and then ok, you should now see a check box with a tick and COM Surrogate written next to it, if so exit out of every window and your problem should be solved.

COM Surrogate errors The Component Object Model (COM) is a platform for developing software components developed by Microsoft and commonly used on operating systems such as Windows Vista, Windows XP or Windows 2003 Server. COM has been known under many names over the last few years including OLE, ActiveX, DCOM and COM+. Essentially it is designed to allow for easy re-use of software.
So what are these errors? COM Surrogate errors can occur when something wrong happens when software uses in-process components outside the main process either on the same machine or on a remote server. The default DLL surrogate (Dllhost.exe) can act as a host for in-process components. This is often used on Windows Vista, XP or Windows Server 2003.
According to Microsoft
"The file Dllhost.exe is an executable component that you can run remotely and instruct to load any in-process component, providing the component with a surrogate parent process and security context."
How to help fix this? Usually some software is out of date on your PC. You could try updating your software components. You might try updating software like Nero or DivX as this often happens with media software players for video files, music or MP3s. Other people have reported success by using QuickTime or Real as an alternative to using the software that caused the previous errors. Here is what you need!!! Click on the Above Link. Follow Each and Every Step!!!

Software problem

Hey there

You get an error message that COM Surrogate has stopped working whenever you browse folders containing video or media files, This problem is caused because of codecs and other COM components installed by various softwares that aren't fully Vista-compatible, like some versions of DivX or Nero.
There are a number of possible solutions to this problem, and the right solution depends greatly on what software is actually causing the problem.

If you are using DivX, you should be upgraded to the very latest version (6.5+)
If you are using Nero, you can try upgrading to the latest version (7.7.5.1+)
If you’ve upgraded Nero and Divx and still have the problem, you can try renaming the file C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter\NeVideo.ax to NeVideo.ax.bak. You may also need to rename NeVideoHD.ax to NeVideoHD.bak

Essentially, turning off Data Execution Prevention on dllhost (the COM surrogate) can fix this problem . This solution is detailed below.
Right click on Computer, and choose Properties
Click on Advanced System Settings, and then under Advanced, click Settings
Select the "Data Execution Protection" tab, and then click “Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select”
Click on the Add button, and then browse to C:\Windows\System32\dllhost.exe as shown

Click Open, and then OK.
Here's what you should see…

Now you can browse video folders without problems!
