Dell GX150 bios sees CD and Harddrive, but windows xp does not.

On boot up its says no harddrive found and no cd, but F2 and F1 to continue.  If I hit F1 windows loads.  I have just reformatted the harddrive so it is blank, but still get this problem at the dos level.  Can anyone help.

I had changed the cd to a dvd.  However, the dvd would not work.  I put the original back into the computer and although the bios saw it (eventually) windows xp did not.  I have reformatted the harddrive trying to reinstall windows, but the bios now says no cd rom.  Then I get the F2 an F12 keys; then it asks me to hit F2 for setup or f12 for menu.  or F1 to continue.  If I continue I get messages saying no harddrive or cd rom.  I have also reinstalled the bios.  I cannot seem to find a way to install any operating system. I also am trying to see if the mobo needs drivers.

I do not know how to reset the bios in a Dell.  I cannot find a place to do so.  I have worked on IBM based computers for years, so this is the first time with Dell computers.  If you know how to reset.  Please let me know.  I have also reset the cmos by removing the battery and then reinstalling it.

The only pin to reset is to reset the password on the mother board.  The only other advice in order to reset the bios was to remove the battery for a few mins and then reset it and restart.  So far none of this has worked.  Now it says ntldr is at fault at the base level and hal.dll is missing.  I ran into these last two problems before and managed to fix them by running an ntldr fix and reinstalling windows.  However, as I cannot seem to get it to locate the cd rom in the first place, I cannot reinstall windows.  I think I just might throw it out the window soon.  (Just kidding).  Remind me not to purchase this brand of computer again.

I also forgot to state that my GX150 is a small form factor computer.

I don't have a pen drive.  I turned off the computer and left the battery out for several minutes.  I can't use any diagnostics if they are on a cd as it does not acknowledge the cd drive and also the harddrive.  I will start working on another computer for the grandchildren and leave it be for now.  Frustration is not a good place for me to be in.  The harddrive is new to me and has been completely reformatted although it was working previous under windows.  However as things were running slow and other programs did not seem to help, I figured I would start from scratch.  Maybe not a good idea now.  Thanks for the help offerred, I am taking a break from this.

Go into the BIOS by pressing F2. Reset the BIOS to defaults and see if the messages go away and you can get into windows.

Good morning! please try to check the jumper settings (Master/Slave) as well as the cable connections of your CD ROM, if still CD Drive doesn't work, kindly try to connect/use another CD ROM - if this work, then the previous CD ROM laser lens is defective. best regards

Did you unplug it when you pulled the battery just a thought. also can you take the hard drive to another computer to install windows on it also how about installing from a usb pendrive and have you tryed any diagnostic tools like ultimate bootcd use these tools you should be able to find the problem. if you haven't got an answer or a fix from this then i'd take it to a shop.

Cant start my laptop it reads "reboot and select proper boot device and the screen is black ?

Go in to bios by pressing del key sometimes F2 or F1 and see if your harddrive is set to 2nd highest boot priority.Set your CD/DVD drive to first. Save your settings and exit. Remove any cd's/dvd's you may have in your drive plus if you have a flash drive plugged into the usb port unplug it before starting.

If you still have this problem, your harddrive might have a problem with the booting files on it. Reinstalling or repairing windows will fix this. Put your windows disc in and boot to it.

Hopefully you wont have a problem installing or repairing windows or your harddrive could be bad. Before buying a new harddrive for it try removing it from the bay and reinstalling it, in case of a bad connection (example:harddrive wasn't fully connected.).You could go into bios and see if it shows up there.

Hope this helps ya.

My dell c400 will not boot windows. it tries then goes to the screen to ask to boot in safe mode. will not boot in safe mode. run diagnostics and it passes everything. any ideas

You need to repair your windows system files.
For that you need windows disk recovery disk.
If you don't have windows disk then buy it from nmearest computer shop.
It is very useful for your computer life.
Insert that disk into cd/dvd rom then when you power up the computer press F1 or F2 or del or ALT + F2 key to enter in bios .
then go to boot menu and st first boot device as cd.dvd rom then save settings and exit.
Then it boot from disk then follow the procedure and press any key to boot from cd..
Then wait for 5 minutes then you can see scren to choose option choose R for enter in recovery console then type in prompt "chkdsk /r" then press enter.
Then it fix and recover error on harddrive.
Then restart computer and again boot with disk then this time choose R for repair previous windoiws then it repair old windows then you can get back your windows.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.

Windows XP CD cannot be detected in Dell Optiplex gx260

Your optical drive might be dirty or bad. Try an official Dell disk to see if it will read it, especially a Dell drivers and Utilities disk. Also try a boot flash drive or boot floppy(since your system is a older) to get the system up. If your system comes up any of those ways, I would try a disk cleaner. If that doesn't help, then you probably have a bad cd drive. You could also look in bios setup to make sure the bios is showing your cd drive. It should list it there somewhere. Probably on the first page.

When i turn on the laptop computer, a message appears: primary hard disk drive not found, fixed optical drive not found. No bootable devices: strike F1 to retry boot;F2 for set up utility. I tried but...

Your BIOS is looking for a drive to "boot" from and does not see your harddrive or CD-rom.

You may have a harddrive failure or bad drive controller.

One way to see is to load your operating system disc in your CD-rom and see if the computer sees the drive and boots up. If it boots, try to locate your "C" drive. If you can't locate the harddrive, it's a good bet it's damaged.

If the CD-rom doesn't boot, it is most likely a bad drive controller or cable.

Boot problem with Dell Optiplex GX150

To reinstall Xp from the CD you need to press F2 and go into the BIOS then select the boot order configuration and make the CD the first boot device and the hard disk the second boot device.
After installing XP, if you wish you can go back into the BIOS and change the boot order to boot from the hard disk first.

I have experienced this problem as well, it is either the CD is scratch or the CD-rom lens needs cleaning, however it can read the content of the CD, I would susgest you try a another CD-rom , borrow it from a friend. It works for me.

It seems like your harddrive has given up the ghost or thrown out the operating system.Power up the machine and enter the bios (Press either Del,F1,F2 to enter) once in bios check the system can see the harddrive,9 If bios can,t recognise the harddrive then it,s dead, If it can then the next step is boot options and make sure it it booting from the harddisk.
If It is then see if there is a recovery progrom in the bios that will enable a system restore,If not then change the boot option to start with a Cdrom and put in the recovery disk that was supplied with the Pc.

When going through the process with the cd you will soon find out if the harddrive is corrupt or Dead.

When using the cd if the system
