Question about Troy Bilt 5.5hp Self Propelled Mower

1 Answer

I OWN A 2006 TROY BUILT HORSE 23HP. THE PROBLEM IS THE ENGINE IS HARD TO CRANK. I REPLACED THE STARTER AND BATTERY. COME TO FIND OUT THE ONLY WAY I CAN GET IT TO CRANK IS TO TAKE THE SPARK PLUGS OUT. ITS LIKE THE COMPRESSION IS KEEPING IT FROM CRANKING.

It still sounds like the battery and/or starter.

Did you super clean all the electrical connections: battery, starter, alternator, etc.?,

What does the charge read on your battery right now? Do you have a voltmeter to check it?

You either have a problem with the wiring and its not allowing the voltage to flow freely to the start or there is some type of internal engine failure that is causing the valves to stay closed.

Mower turns just a couple times then stops. Could it be the starter (725cc 23hp Kohler engine, troy build hourse)

sounds like the valves are out of adjustment. not letting the compression stroke release on time.

This is a Troy Bilt Big Red Horse Tiller. Wont crank. new battery. ignition switch good. starter relay clicks when ignition switch turned. jumpering the relay makes the starter spin.

The starter solenoid/relay clicking can mean a bad starter solenoid/relay or bad grounding. Not knowing what engine you have as they have used Kohler, Tecumseh and Briggs and Stratton over the years. hope this helps

The engine will have a valve lifter on the cam shaft to reduve the compression on start up if the valve clerances are too wide the lift will not work making it very slow to crank.

My lawn mower is trying to turn over but won't completely. we have replaced the starter, battery, and spark plug. why will this not crank and turn over?

It probably has a faulty starter solenoid which won't allow full amperage to the starter. Also the valve clearances need checking because if they are too loose the built in decompressor will not work and allow the engine to crank over. Regards Phil

I am looking for a wireing diagram for a soloenoid part # 725-142A on a Troy-Bilt 13AP60TP766 Horse (2006)

here is web site for parts

http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=troy_bilt&mn=13AP60TP766+Horse+%282006%29

http://www.outdoordistributors.com/MTD/MTDpartslists.html

enter model numbers and select manual download

basically heavy red wire from battery goes to 1 heavy termial on soleniod and the other red lead that is connected to starter motor goes to to the other heavy solenoid terminal

their should be a wire that comes from main switch ( from start mode )
that connects to small solenoid tab and the other tab if it has one will be for a earth ground wire

12 vlt comes from start switch ( start mode ) and energises solenoid
pulls contactor together to make contact accross heavy terminals and sends volltage to starter motor , s/motor turns over engine

cheers

Have a 9 horse troy built 33in walk behind mower,I want to replace the engine with a another briggs a 15 horse, but it has some extra wires to the carburater bowl and I wnat to make sure where they go and...

The wire to the carb bowl is a fuel shut-off solenoid. Needs battery voltage applied while the engine is starting/running. Your ignition switch will need a 'load' connection (battery voltage when 'ON' or 'START', off otherwise.

If your ignition switch is not suitable, you will have to rig something.

That's the engine number. It's a 6Hp Tecumseh. Go on ebay and buy the Troy Bilt parts manuals on CD for Horse Roto Tillers (if that's what it's on). I paid $8. Definitely worth it.

My troy bilt horse has serial number 544253, can anyone tell me what the model number is and what year it was built? Thanks

if you have a B&S engine look at the frist two numbers on the code. thats the year of the engine and more likelyof your unit, As long as the motor has'nt been replaced. I'll checked on your serial number did'nt find a model. If this is an old troy built I'll have to call tech support. also I need to know what engine 4, 4.5, 6, 7, 8, hr power, and the name of the teller. MTD now owens troy built.
