Question about Frigidaire Dehumidifiers

Relative humidity setting changes

I just installed a new Frigidare Dehumidifier. I set it for 35% relative humidity. After a fe minutes, the indicator changes to 65% relatively humidity. Why doesn't it stay at what I set it for?

You may be right but the ambient humidity according to the weather bureau is now about 45%. I would think that it would not be that much higher indoors.

  • kenkhumophre May 13, 2009

It turns out to be as with the last comment. The Rh in the room is displayed until the RH drops to the set point. The owner's manual is worthless on this and many other points.

My guess is the unit knows it can't reach 35% humidity, bacause it's measuring the ambient humidity. Dehumidifiers usually can't drop the RH more than around 10%.

My guess is the RH in the room is around 75% when this happens.

In and out RH can be vastly different -- in addition weather stations report humidity measured at locations which could have a very different RH than a reading 5 miles away, for example.

There may be a hygrometer on your dehumidifier unit -- maybe that will tell you.

  • Samuel Charles Spriggs May 13, 2009

Another thought is that the 65% you see may be where the display goes so many seconds after it displays where you set it -- it then displays the RH in the room. Do you have an owner's manual to check that?

Yep, owner's manuals "ain't what they used to be".

The condenser can only remove humidity if there is still humidity in the air. What's your Relative Humidity? A manual sling psychrometer is cheap enough to check it.

I would set them to the relative humidity I wanted in that area. You want to keep below 50% otherwise you will eventuially get mold growth.

On a dehumidifer, you set the relative humidity, not temperature. Normally the humidity should be set within 40 to 60 percent humidity.

The dehumidifier cuts off when it is set on 70% as soon as the compressor cuts on. i can leave it on lo and it runs.

If you're setting the humidity level on 70 % , that means you want to leave the relative humidity in the house at 70%. That's why the dehumidifier is cutting off. Your house is already at 70% humidity or higher. If you want to remove humidity, set the level lower. If your trying to make it cooler in the house or remove a lot of moisture, set it a 35 to 45%.

Hope this helped solve your problem.

Santa fe dehumidifier running but not producing any condensate. No ice forming on the coils and filter is clean.

You should check if the compressor is running. Your description makes it appear that the fan may be running and the compressor may not be running.

There are many things that can cause a compressor to cease running:

Open defrost thermostat
Bad run capacitor
Low refrigerant charge (caused by refrigerant leak)
Bad compressor relay
Bad compressor overload
Bad compressor motor

Other things to check:

If the fan switch is set to "on" and the humidity control is set to a high humidity level, the unit may appear to be running, but the compressor will not operate. Check the setting of your humidity control.

If the dehumidifier is operating in a room with a high temperature and a low dew point (very low relative humidity), it may be unable to remove any more moisture from the air.

If you are not comfortable troubleshooting the unit on your own, call the manufacturer service department at 1-800-533-7533, EXT 8459. They are very helpful.

My Santa Fe compact dehumidifier in my crawlspace makes a noise (not a smooth humming sound but more of a harsh vibrating sound) when it is not dehumidifying. I can turn the knob to the dryest setting and...

The black cylinder is the compressor. It sounds like your unit is cycling the compressor for some reason. If the compressor starts, runs fine, and removes water when you set the humidity control to the driest setting the compressor is probably OK and the problem may be with the humidity control causing the dehumidifier to "short cycle" for some reason. You may need to change the humidity control or relocate the dehumidifier in your crawl space.
If the compressor attempts to start, and then sits quiet for 10 minutes, and then attempts to start again, you have a problem with the dehumidifier. There are a few things that can cause this problem:
Low refrigerant charge
Bad compressor capacitor
Bad compressor overload
Plugged capillary tube or broken expansion valve
are the common causes of this behavior. If you suspect one of these problems, call the factory service department at 1-800-533-7533 for help.

Good luck with your dehumidiifer.

Dehumidifier runs however there is no water in bucket. Thx

Maybe there is no water in the air. Is your machine set to ON or is it set to some % setting? If set to ON - move the setting to relative humidity setting. You want 50% or more for comfort, usually not more than 75% in my experience.

It is winter where I am located - not much water in the air where I am - it may be the same where you are.

LG LD65E humidity variance

Is the compressor running or is it just the fan? If its just the fan it is because it is cycling the air and it uses that air flow to check the humidity in the air. If the fan runs non-stop and the compressor does not turn on or the fan does not shut off there is a problem with this unit and you will need to replace it. Since it is brand new you should still be able to return it to the store.

Frigidare Dehumidifier will not turn off

Pressure and temperature is directly related with refrigerants in the system. Ice building on part of the coils shows that the pressure inside the system is low and the system has lost some of its charge. Very low humidity with a low ambient temperature will also cause such a problem.
