HP 990cx1 unable to print from Vista

Original hp program does not seen to work. drivers unable to set up. Tried seting up with windows installed driver. Seems to be set up but when I print windows says printing has been sent but notheing happens at the printer. Unable to check level of ink  - PC says unable to establish 2 way connection. Using USB, have also tied parrellel port. unable to down load new drivers from HP as they say it is installed in Vista. Not sure this is the problem possible the print manager ?? tried just about every thing I can with drivers. Not sure if it is driver problem or other but printer seems to set up but will just not recieve any printing. Printer and cable work fine on other machines with XP.

What would be hlpful if HP had an updated program with drivers included then presuming it is a compatabiltiy problem.

I am not sure this is the correct solution for me as I don't want to dual boot. The Laptop came with Vista (legit copy) installed but without disks. When you go to HP web site it says they have no driver to download because it comes with Vista. Is there any way to force the printer/ programs to work. It seems some older programs do work in compatabilty mode. Is there anything available out there that I can download to fix. I can't see HP providing an updated Driver or program if they advise it is covered already in Vista. - I have downloaded all I can find on HP site even been on their 2 way service who could not fix either ??

  • Jeff Oct 15, 2007

I have been to HP web site again and downloaded program that checks your printer driver. It comfirms the Printer is connected to the PC via USB cable and says I am using the correct driver. I have installed old printer program that came with.. I can print a test page from here - whe I try to print from any other program - it goes to print que then a notification appears at the bottom of the screen - this ususal says 0 printes sent to printer.
Separately when I install new hardware the first time I have to direct windows to the Driver Store as it is unable to locate.
I need a cheap solution prferably free as a replacement printer costs less than £200($400) and who wants to dump a perfectly good printer.
Also not sure about having an external connection to someone I don't know - security. I can email file and pages of file info.

  • Jeff Oct 15, 2007

We're geting somewhere -Have removed fax and XPS printer. Can now run test page from printer properties or other program but both are coming up as 'This document failed to print'. Also documents are now held in printer que. So that must have been part of the problem.

I'll try deleting printer and USB print driver and set up again. First.

  • Jeff Oct 15, 2007

Well, now I have done that I found when I removed the XPS and fax printers the USB printing support had been lost. Now it's back things are the same and printing whizzes through the print que as if it is going somewhere.

  • Jeff Oct 15, 2007

by the way I was able to print a test page from the original printer assistant that came with the printer - this is the bit where it can clean, print various types of test pages but also the bit where it says 'not able to establish 2 way connection'. I have it on XP compatability -

jmorgan123 - This is one of the most useless technical helpers ever - at least the others have some technical know -how !!!

Yes I am aware that the printer is not new but it should run on Vista but does not.

  • Jeff Oct 21, 2007

Many thanks for all your comments and help . If I could do just basic printing I would be delighted but I cannot get anything at all from it................... as you say I have numerous old drivers installed now from HP that are not making things easier. Perhaps If I beg the wife for a new printer for Christmas ?

As a lst resort I am in contact with HP support - . I have verified that the printer is connected and printing will stay in the print queue untill I plug in the USB cable; it says it is printing to the correct printer and port but then nothing.........................Many thanks

Check that your programs aren't trying to print to a default printer which doesn't exist.

Delete all the printers and copies of printers in 'Printers and Faxes' except the one that you know works via the 'Print Test Page'

I can understand your frustration at jmorgan123's comment but he is just being painfully honest.

The printer is discontinued. And Vista only provides a basic driver.

    From the HP website.

"The scanning feature works only with Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista Business, and Windows Vista Enterprise.

You might find that some of the advanced features are no longer available when using this basic driver. You can upgrade to an HP product that is fully compatible with Windows Vista if the advanced features are necessary"

I'm sure you have already done this but humor me, maybe you forgot something in the process.  I've had a lot of HP's over time and sometimes they can be just stubborn!

Disconnect the printer.
Go into the "printer" menu> if the printer is shown open it and remove any docs in "que". Then remove any installed printers.
Go into the Control panel>  System > Hardware devices> and remove any printer listed.  Check for any yellow ! and remove them.  "Reboot...

Let your system come back on line. Give it 2-3 minutes. Let all the background processing finish.

Turn "on" your printer...without USB cable.  In the "printer" there is a menu, you should be able to print out a "test page".  If you can "Print" one. Extra step but this just reconfirms the printer is working.

Connect "USB" cable to computer.  Window Vista should detect "new device" and install the drivers for it.  If it does not, try a different the cable.

If the driver appears to have been installed, check the printer & fax menu> look to see if your printer is listed.  If it is, try printing a "test page".

If it works after this problem solved.

If not go to the two links I have provided. Sounds like you already have but try again.  One link has what I just suggested but in a different fashion.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00808543&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=60098&lang=en

Good luck, Please let us know the results, thank you.

PS: according to HP not all the features are available for this printer using Vista.  It may be easier to upgrade to a newer printer.

    Mr Langdale,

Going back to my original post, you did not need to remove the fax or xps.  To get them back you need to go to the contrl panel > add/remove> add win components> find the fax and xps and re-install them.  You can re-try what I told you but now I need to caution you about continually pursing this issue.  In your attempts I am now concerned you may eventually corrupt "good files" needlessly with repeated installing and un-installing hardware or software.  It has happen to me and it is very frustrating.

As far as the HP990 printer goes, we have many people giving advice.  Based on what you have told us they are all correct more or less in their own fashion because they don't have the full picture in of them. Neither do I.

But based on what we know, you have this problem:

    1. A printer

(HP990) which is no longer in production.

    2. A new Win Vista program on a laptop which does not have the "discs" and which states they have HP generic drivers built in.

    3. The drivers Vista has will not give you full capability of the printer per HP.

    4. We also know Hp will not write new drivers and have recommend an upgrade.

    5. We also know that this is a software compatibility issue that neither you or I can solve.
As hard as it may be to accept, there are times when we are not going to get what we want.  I believe this is one of those times.  The best you are going to achieve is the printer will print but in most likely hood will not scan and it simply will not have all the features. That comes directly from HP.  And based on what you have told me that is not acceptable.

So unfortunately, I cannot help any more than I have. I believe you will need to bite the bullet and buy a newer printer or revert using this printer on a different computer which has WinXP.  I wish I could give the magic answer but I can not.  Good luck to you.

  • Jerry Hess Oct 24, 2007

    Mr Langdale,

Have you gotten any more help from HP?

Another thought!  What's nice about windows is you can go back in time and start over.  Have you tried that?

    Start>programs>accessories>system tools> restore point

You should have a "recovery point" on your computer in windows.   You might also try going back to the "date" you had the printer actually working but the documents were going into que only.  Then you might be able to remove any "old" drivers or HP programs.  Look in  >Control panel>add/remove> and check the list to see if there is any HP printer programs.  That program may be what's causing the problem because its not compatible with Vista. Remove it and do the un-install I suggested before.  But do a "hard boot" (shut down completely-power off) this time.

Just another idea for you to try.  Good Luck

The problem is definitely due to compatibility...To solve this and you want to use vista as well you will need to use dual-booting(two operating systems on the same machine)A wise choice would be a combination of XP and VIsta...This will solve the problem at least until your printer drivers for VIsta are out..

Hi Noel, Let me start by informing you it is not a problem with your printer but it is a problem with your print drivers on your pc or windows itself.

What I normally find is that that is corrupt driver installed on the system, your best bet is to uninstall via control panel/programs and features (or add remove programs depending on windows version) all old printer driver software and also remove completely this HP's software, you will probally find old programs that were installed on/with previous printers, get rid of them all as I have seen conflicts occur when two different driver software programs are installed (especially epson). Once you have removed old printer programs, go to printers and faxs and delete all unused icons for old printers and also this Hp's one. Then reboot.

Dont use the CD to install new drivers go to HP's web and download the latest HP driver for use with your printer and operating system, ensure it is exactly correct but even the HP universal driver should work as long as it is for the right windows system ie Vista, or Win7 64bit etc.

What is your windows system? (im guessing Vista as it has known to have issues) Also ensure you have the latest service packs installed from windows update, expessally if using VIsta

Let me know how you go but from many years experance let me assure you it is not a issue with the printer itself but a problem with the way in which windows is trying to communicate with it via installed software and windows print spooling software.

Cheers Steve

Please make sure you get you driver software from HP directly first google search is not HP, here is the correct link

How i check the cartage level, i am unable to doo that, plz help me...if have to any command direct to see ..please let u inform me..My printer is HP Clour Laser Jet 1600 ...

Check ink levels Use one of the following methods to check the ink levels. NOTE: If you have installed a refilled or remanufactured print cartridge or a cartridge that has been used in another printer, the ink level indicator will be inaccurate or unavailable. Method one: Use HP Solution Center to check ink levels HP Solution Center is software that acts as a centralized point of access for tasks such as scanning, printing, and copying. The software is part of the software package that comes with your product. When you perform a standard installation of the HP software, HP Solution Center is automatically installed. You must have the full-feature print driver, which includes HP Solution Center, installed to use this method. If you do not have the full-feature print driver installed on your computer, you can install it now. Alternatively, you can use 'Method two: Check ink levels from the software program' to check the ink levels. Click this link (c02463264) (in English) to see instructions for installing the full-feature print driver and HP Solution Center.
  1. Open HP Solution Center.
    • Windows XP : On the Windows taskbar, click Start , click All Programs , point to HP , and then click HP Solution Center .
    • Windows Vista : On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (c01364735.gif), click All Programs , click HP , and then click HP Solution Center .
    • Windows 7 : Click the Windows icon (c01364735.gif ), click Programs , click HP, and then click HP Solution Center .
  2. Click Settings , and then click Printer Toolbox .
  3. Click the Device Services tab, and then click the Estimated Ink Levels tab.
    or try this link: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00257147&tmp_task=useCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&site=null&lang=en&product=390328&key=null

Can't define custom paper size on HP2600n after Vista upgrade

Went to HP support web site and found the following info. The HP drivers link will take to their download site If you haven't installed the Vista Print drivers yet.

Our church bought new computers with Vista Busines two years ago and after struggling with it for 6 months went back XP Pro. This was before any Vista service packs had been released so I'm not sure if these issues have improved. We are in no hurry to upgrade to Vista. Some articles I've read about 6 months ago recommended waiting for windows 7. I haven't followed how the release of windows 7 is going. Vista is a VERY DIFFERENT ANIMAL and can be frustrating. Been there and I feel your pain.

Bottom of page is cut off sometimes printing from vista computer

Hi- I'll try to solve this.

Go to the start menu and open the Control Panel. Double click on Printers. Right click the L7580 printer and choose "Printing Preferences" On the preferences window click on the "Advanced" tab. Make sure "Advanced Printing Features" is set to "Enabled" Under "Printer Features" turn "Minimize Margins" to "On"

This should solve the issue. If minimize margins is off, it will cut it off at the bottom.

Hp psc 1215 wont scan with vista

s.gif s.gif

Introduction Some products do not have full scan functionality in Windows Vista. This is because full-featured Vista drivers are not available for all products, especially older products. However, the Windows Vista operating system installed on your computer includes a basic print driver. This driver allows you to scan an original and save it as an image using workaround methods. You cannot use the advanced scanning features that you might have used with your product before you installed Microsoft Windows Vista. Scanning an original and saving it as an image Follow these steps to scan an original document, and then save it as an image. Step one: Load the original Follow these instructions to load the original in the product.
  1. Raise the top cover of the product.
  2. Place your original print-side down on the glass.
NOTE: The engraved diagram next to the scanner glass shows exactly where to place the document (usually on the right-front corner or the left-front corner).
  3. Close the scanner lid.
Step two: Workarounds for scanning an original and saving it to the computer Select one of the following three workaround methods to scan an original and save it as an image. Method one: Scan with Windows Photo Gallery
  1. Click the Windows (c01319360.gif ) icon.
  2. Click Programs .
  3. Click Windows Photo Gallery . The program opens in a new window.
  4. Click File , and then click Import from Camera or Scanner .
  5. Click Import .
  6. Click Scan .
Method two: Scan with Windows Fax and Scanning

Old hp printer won't print anything with new hp desktop computer

Your PC has VISTA loaded (according to the HP web specs)

This printer has no specific driver for VISTA but basic functionality is supported by VISTA without the need to load a seperate driver.

refer HERE

The printer connects via a USB cable to the PC and should be detected automatically by VISTA whe the printer is turned on.

The original CD would have drivers for an earlier vesrion of windows (98 or XP) so you should uninstall any programs that were installed offthe disk.
