12 hp briggs backfires doesn't start

This could be a result of several different things, however the most common of these would be a sheered flywheel key. If this is the case it has throwed the motor out of time and is trying to fire while the exhaust valve is open causing the backfire and lack of compression to start. I hope this has helped.

I have a Poulan Pro push mower with a Honda engine that is leaking oil when it runs. Its model number is PR55N22SH It is three years old and never had a problem until now. any ideas where to start?

This mower sounds like it took a hit at one time and perhaps bent the blade, shaft?
If you had to replace the blade because it in fact did hit something then you would also want to be sure the sheer pin is ok, that is an easy test.... it goes like this, does it pull smooth when you are trying to start or does it backfire, shake, run raggy and at times want to pull your arms out of their sockets from the kick back?
Before checking the sheer pin you must determine if the shaft is bent(the shaft supports the balde) Raise mower off the ground, pull the spark plug out of the cylinder and turn the shaft, does the blade hit the casing underneath, if it does you are either buying a new mower or paying a lot to repair this one.
Also if any or all these situational events happened to the mower it is safe to say that the shaft oil seal is leaking on the bottom of the mower, remove plug and remove blade, inspect seal just above where the blade sits, its a round pressed rubber lipped seal around the shaft.
If it does all that then you need to pull the top cover and pull cord plate off the mower, take off the 3/4" nut left loosens, and check the sheer pin, its in the 1/4 wide x1/2 " long groove going down the shaft just below where you removed the 3/4 " nut, if its worn or partially worn pull the aluminum looking round cover off using a soft tap with a hammer to remove or a wheel puller and take the old sheer pin to Ace or the like hardware to match up a new one, install using the reverse proceedure, tighten the 3/4" nut to about 50 ft. pounds. Happy Mowing!!
