Question about Apex Digital GB55HD09W 55" Rear Projection Television

Apex out of convergence

I have an Apex GB55HD09W. I am getting triple images and I know that the convergence is out of adjustment. I followed the directions in my operation manual, and the tv is not responding when I push the appropriate keys to adjust it. I can get into the menu, and get to the adujustment screen, but then, no response. What does this mean?

I have this TV and have fixed this issue. If you cannot adjust Red or Blue convergence, then your STK ICs are defective. The signal board or Digital convergence board is not able to adjust sig lines on the deflection board so pushing buttons does nothing. The STK's are your amplifiers for vertical and horizontal. This will require dissassembly and soldering. You'll need 2 STK392-020 IC's and 125v/5A pico fuse or buss fuse..

The STK's are mounted on 2 massive heatsinks. Can't miss it. Word of advice, LABEL the 3-4 Pin plugs B,G,R from left to right. These are your Vertical and Horizontal coils for each tube. Don't mix them up. I did and the tv survived luckily. Chances are if your STK's poped, then they took out the -25v line. Take out the power supply that is mounted vertically on the right. Look for a row of axiel lead fuses with "SOC 5000" printed on it. They look like white rectangular blocks with leads. Check them all. Particularly RF817. Sits next to RF814. The service manual lists it as a fuse and NOT a Resistor-Fuse like the label suggests. I found more than one typo like this. I replaced mine with a generic 125v/5A fast blow buss fuse. Soldered in a holder for it. Should work the same.

Took me abit to realize it was a fuse on the power supply. This -25 line traces to W057/W058 next to the first STK chip. Explains the symptoms.

Blurred picture red and blue shadows

Hi,
Please run the convergence feature on your TV. Its giving you double image because the red, green, and blue guns are dis aligned. By running convergence it will realign the guns properly. You need to run the convergence feature at least once a week. Please note this is only for CRT rear projection TV's and I assumed it was. If it is an LCD rear projection, then there's nothing you can do to fix such thing, but call a repair person. But if doing the convergence doesn't fix the problem, you need to call a repair person. But I hope you won't have to refer to the manual on how to go about it
Good luck!

Go in and find the conv ICs, they will be mounted on a
big heatsink and the wires going to the conv yokes will
most likely plug in somewhere closeby.
Conv ICs are the workhorse of the CRT RPTV, and it is
not unusual at all for them to need to be changed out
at some time in the life of a CRT RPTV.

PS -
The wires for the conv yokes at the CRT necks are the
thin ones. The thicker ones are for the hor and vert
sweeps, which must never be disconnected from their
circuitry during CRT operation.

If your beam loses sweep on any of the CRTs, it will
instantly score/gouge your phosphors on your CRT faces,
vaporizing the phosphors there and ruining the CRTs.
The beam is very powerful, but in normal operation
moves incredibly fast, not damaging anything. Any
slowdown of the movement of the very powerful beam that
draws the picture, acts like the searing vaporizing beam in Tom Cruise's War of the Worlds.

Convergance green image is to far to the right and goes into a double image

If you know how to solder and unsolder and understand the circuitry of a tv set, then those are the IC's you will most likly need to change. I would look at the fusable links on the board also. If you dont have the training for TV's, this is not the place to begin experimenting with. good Luck
