I have to 'Dongle' my way to the internet!

I have had to resort to a Belkin dongle to receive the Internet as I seem to have a suspect ethernet connection problem. The appropriate led (1 of 4) lit until I pressed the 'reset' button for 40 seconds, as instructed by Belkin's Help Line. I see that the red led adjacent to the ethernet port on the back of the tower is no longer lit. I've tried a new ethernet cable - no joy.

I tried powering down and up several times and have substituted the ethernet cable. Could I perhaps have damaged the unit by pressing the reset button?
