Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

I want to scan documents using a Brother MFC9840CDW using the front panel controls on the device then having the output printed out on an identical unit somewhere else on the network. The scanning part is easy. The problem is how to get the output sent to another printer. I know how to scan/print using software loaded on a workstation but I'm trying to save a few steps by using the printer controls only.

I know how to scan to a file using the Brother software. What I'm trying to do is eliminate this step and use the control panel only. There should be a way to enter the IP address of the other printer and then specify that output goes to that unit.

Brother support says it's possible to do on this unit but I need more help than they can provide.

I don't believe this is possible, but you can try by selecting the scan button on the machine, and select 'image, if the other printer shows up on the screen, then select it and push ok. The other machine may receive it and you may have to select print. Otherwise, You can scan to a PDF file on your computer, and then print the PDF file from the other printer.

As I said, I don't believe it is possible. If your DHCP server has assigned an address to both printers but the address of the other printer does not show up in the 1st printer dialogue box, then the printer isn't designed to print to another printer.

You can simply follow the link to the brother support site and ask Brother via email. If they tell you it cannot be done, then my initial response would be correct

Brother support agents say its possible but don't know how to do it? If they don't know how to do it, how do they know its possible?

I have a Brother MFC-7860DW. It is connected to my computer for printing, I need to know how to connect it to my computer for scanning. I need to scan documents onto my desktop.

If you installed the Brother Software from the original CD, then the scanner is more than likely already installed and ready for use. To check this go to Start - Control Panel - Scanners and Cameras ans see it the scanner is listed as a device in this area. If so, test it. Let me know if this is the case and we can move on to the next step.

Brother Mfc9840cdw (except for fax send) has been very good. During print job (2nd computer sent job during print from 1st computer), red light suddenly came on. everything stopped. No sign of a jam. No...

the machine is nearing service time.. Normally this is maintenance and resetting the print clock..

  • press both 3 and 9 buttons at the same time and hold
  • select each item 1 at a time and press ok
  • press 1 to reset it..
  • do this for each item in the list
  • repeat for each item.

I have a brother MFC 9440CN when I try to scan a document the error message comes up as not being connected to pc. The cable is definitly connected as the print option works fine. Can you help. Thank you.

Are you scanning from the PC, or are you scanning from the printer?

If the latter, the scanner is trying to send the document to a server software on the PC, which is probably not running; hence the "not connected" message.

Try acquiring a picture using Control Panel -> Scanners -> Acquire Image and see if it works. If it does, you must run (or reinstall) the Control Center software, and configure it as to where to store the Scan-to-File documents.

Won't recognize legal size paper

I have a Brother MFC-8840Dn (full legal-size flatbed as well as document feeder). I use Windows XP Pro and a USB connection. I'm not sure my fix works with other Brother models or different Windows operating systems, but it's a way to start troubleshooting at least.

I've always been able to print legal-sized pages from word processing or spreadsheet programs and receive legal-sized faxes. But I never could make legal-sized photocopies or PDF scans. The image was always cut off at Letter size. The fix is a Brother Utility set-up setting:

*** Go to Start / All Programs / Brother / MFL-Pro Suite MFC 8840Dn / Scanner Utility. (This link may also be called something like Scanner Settings.)
*** At the "Maximum Scanning Size", select "Legal" instead of "Letter/A4".
*** Click OK and restart your PC for the new setting to take effect.

It's like magic -- I can now scan a full legal-sized PDF, whether on the flatbed or through the ADF. I also tried a compressed TIFF scan and it came out fine.

**** Make sure your software and/or Brother Control Center scanning configurations are set to Legal if that's what you want for the particular image scan. The Brother Utility setting simply enables the option of choosing the larger legal-sized paper, which then allows the full legal-sized image scan, You always have to set your software to make that choice, just as you would to make and print smaller images on Letter, A4, envelopes, etc. (NOTE: I always start scans through software on my PC, like Adobe Acrobat or PaperPort, and the Utility Setting fix is working fine. However, I just tried pressing the SCAN button on the front panel of the MFC itself with a legal-sized document on the flatbed and through the document feeder. I still got Letter-sized image scans. So, there must be another setting somewhere for starting scans directly from the MFC that I'll locate later.)

I was about to buy a different brand of scanner because of the frustration with legal-sized images. It's like having a new scanner now :) I hope this Utility Setting info helps you troubleshoot your legal-sized image problem.

MFC-440CN: Prints but does not scan

Go to system/computer control panel, select "scanners and cameras". you should see your brother system in there (if u were able to print to it but not scan). Right click on it, select properties, and select "Network Properties" Tab. Choose select "specify your machine by address" rather by "by name". Most home/home office users dont have a local domain server at home, so even though your printer was named, it cannot be located by tcp-ip using the name, but rather by ipaddress. This solves the issue.
