I have an HP Deskjet 5440 which performs perfectly with Windows. With Suse 11.1 I am using the Foomatic hpijs driver which the system puts in place, On attempting to print, the printer produces page after page each having 3 lines of rubbish and the printer can only be stopped by unplugging the the power

All your solutions assume that there is something wrong with the printer; the printer works faultlessly with Windows! You are barking up the wrong tree; I need a Linux expert; I have learned from the internet of this kind of problem with Linux/HP

I will reinstall the printer. This will take some time so please suspend this conversation 'til I come back again.

    I have found the solution!
I have a Canon printer connected to the USB as well as the HP.
I assumed when I installed the HP printer that it would not cause a problem because it was never powered up while using the Linux.
However, disconnecting the Canon from the USB before installing the HP was the solution.

I remember the only other time i solicited your help, I ended up myself solving the problem and I was able to enable to add this from your database

I believed that you operated a no solution no fee basis!
I am appalled that you have charged me twice even though you didn't come up with any solution!

Clean the contacts on the HP Cartridge. I've had the same error before and i switched it to a fresh new cartridge.. works fine ever since. THen i decided to switch back to the old cartridge, same error as you but i cleaned the contacts on the cartridge, works for a while but done after a week. Problem is that the ribbon circuit is rusted and the printer doesnt recognize the ink anymore.

Also make sure you both have the ink cartridges in place. Make sure it is seated properly inside.

hope this helps!

I have a HP F380 All in One Deskjet Printer Mac OS 10.5.8 Printing for over 2 years using Airport Scanning I need to connect by usb Issue: I reset the settings and can't find the driver I used to...

Thanks for using Fixya.
First, Uninstall your HP F380 and then again reinstall it.

If your printer is connected via usb to airport extreme you will have to download and install the following.
1. espgs-7.07.1.ppc.dmg

2. hpijs-foomatic-2.0.2.ppc.dmg

Do this by going to The Linux Foundation (

Install in the order listed above, they both must be installed for this to work.

Then do the following:

1. Go to > system preferences > print & fax

2. Click "+" to add a printer

3. The HP F380 will be listed with the connection type "Bonjour"

4. Highlight this printer

5. At the bottom of the window you will see the option for "Print Using" and than you can choose something from the drop down menu.

6. Scroll down to "HP" and choose that

7. This now propagates a window full of HP printers including the HP F380 drivers that you installed above.

8. Scroll down until you see "HP F380 FOOTMATIC" and highlight this.

9. Click "add".

That's it, your done and it should work.
Good Luck and have a nice day.
Rating the solution is highly appreciated.

Windows comes with drivers for many HP printers.

You can try to install your HP deskjet 5440 by going to (depending on operating system) "Start", "Printers and Faxes", "Add Printer". Select a local port. Select "HP" and Model "HP Deskjet 5440".

If 5440 is not in your list, or if you want the latest driver, you can download the driver for your specific operating system here:
