Thanks.  What I really want is check hard disk table (cyl, head, etc) which I used to see in BIOS.  Where is it for this computer?  I selected all items within the system setup page 1 and 2, but I never got to see about the hard disks.  Delinked 5/19/09

I cannot boot from the cd rom to do a fresh install of windows xp onto the laptop (Toshiba Satellite 1805-S274 PC Notebook)

Most computers need to have the boot order reset in the Bios to enable booting from cd. The following should be the correct way to access the Bios setup for this model.

Starting with the system powered off (not in sleep/suspend or hibernate mode)-Start with the system powered off. Press the power button and then immediately press and hold the Esc key while the system runs the POST (Power On Self Test). When the POST finishes, a prompt will appear telling you to press the F1 key to enter BIOS Setup. At that time, press the F1 key to access the BIOS Setup program.

Once in the Bios setup, change the boot order to boot first from cd, then save changes and exit. You should then be able to run the cd install.

Install new hdd toshiba a15-s157

Not much, its all pretty automatic, just answer the questions.
After installing the WD, power up, open the tray, insert the reinstall disk and reboot.
One of 3 things will happen. It will boot to the CD and start installing, or press and key to boot from CD will appear (press any key quickly), or it will try to boot from the hard drive and fail. If you experience the last option it means that the hard drive is set to boot before CD. Yor system may have a boot menu option where you can select the boot device or you may have to go into the bios and change the boot order.

The follow link is to a Toshiba article that explains the boot menu and changing the boot sequence in the bios.

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlView.jsp?soid=403623&moi

What it does not explain is how to access the bios. On some Toshiba system you have to press ESC right after you hit the power button, on others it is F1, on newer systems you have to hold the ESC while you press the power button and hold it until it display System Check and then press F1 .

Bios

To enter the BIOS, press the Esc key when the Toshiba script shows up on the display. You should then get a message to press the F1 key to continue. Press the F1 key and you should be in the BIOS. The Boot sequence is on Page 2 of the Bios settings on many Toshibas. To get to page 2 press the page down key. Make sure you follow the screen prompts because your system may be slightly different.

Please rate this, thanks
