Question about Cobra 29 LTD CB Radio

1 Answer

Cobra 29 LTD. R56 smoked. I replaced it and it emediatly smoked again! I feel like I've read about this problem before. I'm thinking it was a problem with one of the capacitors or the final. Can someone suggest a plan of attack? Also I forgot the value of R56. I think 23ohms but not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Thanks Benimur. I have a replacement final on hand. I have no idea how to test the final to see if it's shorted. Could you tell me how to test it with my meter? Also the final I have on hand is used and not sure if it's any good. Knowing how to test would be awesome.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

R56 is 22 ohms. Possibly the finals shorted TR14, 2SC2029. Better check R123 (1 ohm) also.

Here is the schematics should you have a need for it.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

As explained here, procedures are as follows:

    • With
      the meter set to measure
      ohms, clip one meter
      lead to the base
      connection of the
      transistor.

    • Touch
      the other lead first
      onto the collector lead
      and then onto the
      emitter lead.

    • The readings should both
      be the same, either both
      high resistance or both
      low resistance.

    • Now reverse the leads
      and repeat the
      procedure.

      The results should be
      the opposite of those
      obtained before.

      If they were both high
      before they should now
      be both low.

      If they were both low
      before they should now
      both be high.

    • Now measure the
      resistance between
      emitter and collector.

      It should read high
      resistance in both
      directions.

How to change RF meter lite in cobra LTD 29 radio

It's a small bulb . There is a number on it. You may have to get a magnifying glass to read it. It is soldered in so removal will require a soldering iron of a low wattage.

Cobra 29 ltd. turned rv4 switch and cb started smoking. what is the cause of this

if this is a used radio its because some golden screwdriver got into it but if its a new one then its the radio.Check the reverse polarity diode in either case to see if its burnt. If so replace it and see if it happens again.

Cobra 29 ltd (1993)

Looking at the schematic TR23 colector ties in with
the power switch ,check D22 it's a 9.1 to 10 volt
zener diode also check C11 an D21.
TR23 shows to be a 2SC1096 I would go ahead and
replace it.Be sure that the CB-PA switch is in good
working order;
Good luck maybe this helped.

My Cobra 29 ltd classic

Hello MyPete,

You have some form of short circuit in your CB, most likley I would suspect the Power supply or the RF Power Output Amplifier. Here are some basic instruction on how to tell wher the smoke is coming from.

1) disconnect and remove your CB from your vehicle and put it on a workbench
2) remove the cover from your CB and expose the circuit board to view
3) connect your CB to an external 12 volt power source and antenna or a dummy load
4) power up the CB and determine where the smoke is coming from then turn off the power supply to the CB
5) At this point you will need a schematic of your CB (get one from www.servicemanuals.com)
6) find the point on the schematic that relates to the point where the smoke is coming from
7) using a ohmmeter determine which component and or components are shorted
8) replace the shorted and or malfunctioning components.
9) test the system (power on, transmit and receive)
10) close the unit back up
11) reinstall into vehicle
12) run tests again.

This should help

Thank you
