There may be some problems on the software and hardware.
1. Check the charging adapter and charging cable. If there is somewhere broken, change a new one.
2. Update the iOS system to the latest version.
3. Replace to a new battery.
4. Clean up the charging port.
5. Use iOSFix to troubleshoot all system issues.

My battery on the iPhone 4s has trouble at times keeping its charge, it seems as though there is nothing running in the background. How much would another batter cost?

For a 4S, it really won't be worth the price of replacing the battery. But if you are set on keeping the same phone instead of buying a new one, there are a couple things to keep in mind to keep your phone running well.

1. Turn your phone all the way off and all the way back on at least once every 2 days. This refreshes everything and its amazing how many problems it will fix before they even start.

2. Don't be afraid of letting your battery die every once in awhile. Its actually good for it. Charge your phone all the way, and then let it run all the way down without charging it until AFTER the battery dies.

3. Don't charge your phone until you have to. Charging when you still have 70% will just put unnecessary wear on your battery. A good rule of thumb is to wait until it is down to 20%, or even 10% if you dare.

And it all else fails, spend $15-25 on a lipstick-sized portable charger and carry it with you for those times when you need a quick boost.

Hope that helps!

Why wont my motorola photon q phone charge or power up...no green light comes on at all

Your charge cord may fit, but it may not be configured to your phone. I just bought a new Nexus phone that has the same charge port as my older Galaxy 4s phone. The Nexus charge plug fits into the Galaxy 4s charge port with no problems but does not charge after plugged into outlet. But the older charge cord will work with the new Nexus charging wise but data transfer will not work. So you may have a charge cord that plugs into phone, but may be configured differently due to phone manufacturer. Hope this helps.

Samsung galaxy 4s was plugged in to phone, smelled burning, now phone wont charge

Hmmm Doesn't sound good. Might be time for new phone. Something shorted in your phone drawing too much current and overheating the connector. Even after replacing the obvious burned components, the problem may remain.

Turn it off and plug it in to charge (do not turn it back on, it will turn on by itself).
