Could be 2 things....
1) The receiver could be set to feed the right speaker with more volume. Check the volume setting for each individual speaker on the receiver.

2) The cable connecting the left input from your dvd player is not connected properly or is bad. Try swapping the left and right audio input cables to see if this moves the problem to the other side. If it does - get a new cable.

What's your problem?no sound

Put your unit in Direct Mode or Pure Audio Mode. If you now have audio in your front right and left channels only then you have a problem with your DSP circuit. If you do not have audio at all, then check your + and - 15 or 12 volt lines. If the voltage is missing then you probably have a bad regulator.

My front left speaker has distorted sound coming from it. any advice?

Check to make sure the speaker cone is not damaged. Then test the channel with another speaker (use your front right speaker) to see if the channel is the problem.

What speakers are beneficial with this receiver? I want to have surround sound from my TV and also from my other components - CDs and old record player.

Well to get the full effect of 5.1 surround you will need 2 front speakers, 1 subwoofer, and 2 rear speakers. Personally I used 2 tower speakers, 2 rear speakers and a subwoofer. Match the speakers with the RMS wattage of your Receiver. (100x5) or roughly 50 watts per speaker. Yamaha, KLH, Philips are pretty good speakers.

There should be a botton on the receiver that say for example, Speaker A, Speaker B, Speaker A B witch would be all of them, if your refering to surround sound try the Prologic

Swap the left and right speakers, if the problem transfers, then the left channel is out. Theres 5 amplifier sections in this receiver and that one would be defective. A component troubleshooting technician would need to fix it.

Depending on the watts on your stereo would tell you the most, for example say its 300 watts u buy a 150 watt speaker it would blow the speaker, if you buy a 500 watt speaker your risking frying the stereo, it be best too even it out as best you can, i know that this has nothing to do with what ur asking but it would help you to save more money on buying a new speakers or receiver, now to the answer to you question, i would recommend a 12inch speaker, it would give you good sound quality

Surrond sound

For Stereo Mode (Front L & R Speaker), you must plug RCA cables (match up red and white) from Output on DVD player to DVD Input on the back of the receiver. Then with speaker wire, run from receiver speaker output (Front Speakers) to designated speaker (make sure + and - match up to both input and output). As for hooking up surround sound, I'm currently trying to figure that one out with just using the L, R and Center. I don' t want wire running all over the place just for rears. Hope this helps
