I would say the transmission may need repairs if it is making those noises, I have recently pulled one down and there was no oil in the trans just thick muck, the dirt etc has entered the trans and dried up the oil and turned it all into a thick black muck with some gears rusting inside.
you might want a qualified mower mechanic to check this problem

Transmission not going into reverse or drive

Bummer, has to be an internal trans . problem, snapped the input shaft or something, however, should make sure it's not an axle. That should make noise tho,but check anyway, like put it in reverse and set the brake and just look under the front and make sure one axle isn't spinning.

Lawn mower transmission

This can be a loose belt that is slipping, low fluid in the transaxle, a bad pump (if hydrostatic transaxle) or worn gears, start by checking belt tension, then replace the fluid and filling to proper level, if that fails, the trans will need to be inspected for internal damage to pump and gears

Craftsman GT 3000 will not drive forward or reverse, belt seems ok

Is it a hydro drive or gears? If hydro the trans-axle is bad & needs to be replaced. It is an easy but expensive job.

I have a stanley HYDROSTATIC (no shift lever , just forward and reverse foot pedal,) riding mower , looks like new , bought it used , rebuilt carb , runs great now butttttttt,,,,,when I took it out in...

I have several ideas, but I don't think you are going to like any of them. Fluid pressure in the forward flow is low. Possible causes: 1. Internal seal failure in the trans.
2. Trans fluid is low - has leaked out
3. Trans fluid is thin.
Any of these repairs require major transmission service or trans replacement. For the most part, Hydro transmissions are worry free. When they do have a problem, the recommended repair from Hydro is to replace the trans. They do not have a fill or drain plug, with the exception of having a vent, they are sealed. I have heard of people filling thru the vent, but not always with success and there is no way of knowing when it is full.

It would be one of 2 things. Either the transmission is very low on fluid or the pump inside it has gone bad. Check the fluid first. If the pump is bad call the rebuild shop to see if there might be warranty left. Hope this helps.

I own a Snapper riding mower, hydrostat drive, 14.5 Hp, 38 cut. Reverse speed has suddenly been reduced to a crawl. Could it be the brakes need adjusting or is the engine/transmission shot?

could be a linkage came loose, or that the fluid level in trans is low, has nothing to do with engine but the hydros are prone to failure, also the hydro is driven by a vbelt which can stretch and mimic a trans problem

I have a 25 hp -50 Filling transaxle with fluid?

Hi, I will try to help you. In the rear of the tractor on the right hand side as you stand behind the mower if you get down and look at right over the axle you will see a small hose with a plug in the end of it and that is where you put fluid in. Hope this helps. George
