Question about Toshiba 42H81 42" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Wavy picture except when displaying a 1080p image

I've had my 42H81 for 5 years. Starting two years ago the picture started getting wavy. I had a service technician come out and he replaced the digital convergence unit. The tv was fine for about six months and then it started having a wavy picture when first turned on; after about 10 minutes the picture would be fine. But it's gotten worse over time. Right now, I can view a 1080p image from my cable box attached to a color stream input without any problem. Video from all other inputs, VCR, DVD, regular cable, antena all display a wavy screen. When i set my cable box to a 480 or 720 resolution it displays a wavy screen. I went into service mode to see if I could adjust the convergence. It displays a narrow band at the bottom of the screen fine but the rest of the screen is wavy. If I go to the color stream input my cable box is on (1080p) the convergence screen is perfect. I've read the posts for wavy screens and they point to replacing the STK392-110 convergence chips and 1.8 ohm resistors.  Is replacing the STK392-110 covergence chips a solution for this problem or does the problem lie elsewhere?

I have exactly the same problem. After 10-15 minutes of warm up time it goes away and is fine. You say the hyperboard needs to be replaced, how much would a repair like that typically run, and is it something I could repair myself? Im moderately skilled at fixing small electronics, but have never tried on something like a tv.

Look to see if it happens on the rear audio and video inputs--that will narrow down where the problem is.

Be aware this model was RECALLED and all original owners were supposed to have the set replaced a few years ago.

Also rule out the signal---if using a cable box connect the cable without it directly to the coax fitting---box can cause this---stranger things have happened.

That can be repaired, the vertical and the horizontal that regulate the voltage towards the projection maybe lessen or fulty. you can let the service man/service center repair this. these not much cost you, that is very cheap part and a minimum labor cost.

The problem with the television is the lamp. It is faulty that is why the screen turns wavy in minutes.

The solution to that is to replace the light and your television will be in good condition once again.

The problem is the computer in the TV is set to hold data for 2500 "On/Offs" Once you turn the TV on and off 2500 times, the dots start to appear as the computer cannot store anymore date. Call Panasonic, they will send a tech to your house for free and reset the computer and update it at the same time from 2500 to 1 million on/offs so it wont happen again. It takes maybe 10 mins to complete.

Hope this helps.

You need to take your tv in and have the picture deflector re-aligned.  This doesn't cost much, My dad had to do that to his a few months ago and it cost 30 bucks.

Wavy picture

this is caused by a bad convergence module, and there are probably some dried out electrolytic caps in the circuit as well. i have one in the shop right now that came in with the same problem. if you have it serviced, make sure they replace all of the convergence modules (there are usually 2, but sometimes 3 of them), because if one went bad the other(s) is likely to go out soon as well.
