spin the drum with hand to hear any noise from the bearings on the back of the drum, the drum should turn freely with no grating noise.

Grab the front of the spin tub, if it moves up and down, the bracket that the spin tub bolts to which goes through the back of the wash tub and attaches to the drive pulley in the back could be broken. Whirlpool however will not sell this part separately, only attached to a new spin tub, which is extremely expensive.
