More then likely if the computer itself cant start up with just the battery alone, or run for any amount of time without the power cord plugged into it then its probably the battery.

My HP G72 laptop wont power on, even with a charged battery from another hp, The light wont come on when its plugged in.

Your motherboard has gone bad. The best thing to do is buy a new laptop. You can find a replacement motherboard online but after the cost of the part, shipping, and the pain of removing 100 screws, it just isn't worth it.

Battery icon says consider replacing battery how much would it cost to do this? and is this necessary, i have only had laptop just over a year.

Well in my opinion it really depends on what you use the laptop for. I have an Acer laptop myself (edging onto three years old) and it still gives me about an hour of battery on 3 cells.

Buying the battery from Acer or an official supplier will cost a lot of money, however if you know your model number, you can search Ebay for a generic part from China. They typically ship for free and cost less than 100$.
If you are not planning on needing to much battery time, you should be fine. You could also look into battery conditioning (google it) or purchase a portable power pack as an alternative to a new battery.
It is worth noting that laptops will function without batteries if they are plugged into the wall, so if portability is truly not an issue than don't worry about it.

Hdd light blinks red and won't start.when ac adapter is plugged in the screen is blank when on battery starts working for a couple of seconds and then is dead again. when i leave the battery to charge...

i rand spell check on you. fixed,
ok its a laptop/notebook.
nice full model number , rare here and bravo that.
we have like 10,000 posts here with Laptop dead.
endless , to the extreme, and did you take that bad large battery out first and leave it out and run on AC power only ? yes/no.
we ask that every time, 10,000 times, did you?
did you get text that way on the screen.??????
my wild guess is it runs ON AC battery out, but failed to say that.
so the big battery is bad, like all are now.
this old, batteries, are weak technology, they fail soon and hard.
just like cars, and your flashlight.
for 100 years now,+ never trust any battery and WIN ! (rule of life)

  • so does it turn on /w big battery out , ac pack connected and with AC power, yes /no.?
  • if yes do you get text ever.? on the screen?
  • do you get windows ,(is this vista>? login? or win7?)
  • do you attain the windows desktop? ever?
it will need a new main battery and a new coin cell RTC.
all do that old, non serviced. for 10 long years.
batteries dont last , like electronics do.. not even close.
sorry, but that is battery makers weakness not HP or MS or anyone elses//

one more dead battery, post #10,000

this answer is only partial, after all , your inputs failed to tell how the pc ran with not main battery.
if we started there, the path to a cure would be different.
if answer was NO.
testing is a serial process and in correct order
that is why no simple guessing works. see?

I have had a CQ60 Compaq for a year and a half. last night, it shut itself off and will not turn back on. I have tried the obvious-unplugging cord, removing battery and plugging cord in... nothing works!...

old CQ60s. (had?) have,
staples has real techs? really?
no they are just guessing, for a fact , if they did not do tests.
then they are (guessing or ignorant hacks)
first off CQ60s have a full model number like CQ60-100
never post lacking that, and the OS name like XP, or all answers will wrong.

so big battery out.
new power pack added for $8 new.
power on, fan must blow air, if not blow, clean first.
never seen any 10 year old PC or laptop not be packed in lent
causing overheating so easy.
the fan is first, then make sure the CD eject works
the what is next, the dead coin cell RTC/CMOS battery inside all this old are BAD< how can it be good this old ,it cant (unserviced PCs')
then with that replace and at 2.9v to 3.3v. you see
screens work you see text now. from MR BIOS
MR BIOS always works if the CCFL are not dead.

ever heard of CCFL , they ended just after the great year 2010
and LED was born,
But CCFL black lamps all fail, this old.
all do. as do HDD, Coin cells and all those old huge batteries.
leave the battery out now, big one. until the PC works again.
then get the screens working (hit F10(ESC) to enter setup)BIOS.
seen that hit message for 10 years, right, sure.
the goal on all PCs it to get that HIT text. there.

lets do you a list.
  • big batteries out. NOW , keep those DOGS out !!!
  • AC pack out. (disconnect)
  • hold power button for 10 to 30sec. and release (HP hard reset this is HP magic test on every hp page.....!!!)
  • AC pack new back on PC. laptop
  • power on, fan must blow, if not say so... now. (stop and ask )
  • Power on fan is ok , screen is 100% black no text.
  • got beep codes? or Caps lock led blinking codes?
  • BIOS is dead, hammering the ESC or F10 key as it prompted you for 10 long years, but is BIOS dead now. (no HIT)
  • new coin cell is next per your manual , ask. called by HP the RTC coin cell, search RTC in the service manuals of all HP PC. (real time clock) and if dead BIOS GOES DEAD.
  • Next, the flash light trick if the fan works and no text we do the flash light test, OMG the back lamp is dead !!!
  • the blackscreens of ***** page.
  • did i cover it all?, seems yes, but tell more get more answers.

Batry not workining

The battery might be going dead. Over the years the laptop batteries begin to die. I would get a new battery. Their is a place I know of that will repair your old battery (they stick new cells in), but that costs more than buying a new one. How old is your Laptop? It would also be helpful if you could tell the manufacturer and model number of the Laptop

My charger will not charge the computer, and when it is plugged in it is getting really it my charger or battery??

Toshiba laptops run really hot, normally. It is one thing that I dislike about them. I never investigated, but presumed it was processor, as the heat was being removed by the fan.

Battery Problem

Depending on how old the batteries are they may be shot. Lithium ion laptop batteries only last about 3 years no matter how many times they have been charged and discharged.

If the batteries are fairly new you may have a problem with your charger/adapter.

If you decide to replace the battery do a search for "replacement laptop battery" on Google. You will get dozens of sites that sell replacements. They usually offer a tool where you type in the make and model of your laptop and they will tell you the replacement you need. Very simple. Be aware that a replacement will usually cost from $100 to $200.

Depending on how old your laptop is it might be more cost effective to buy a new laptop for when you need portability. I see pretty decent laptops online for $500 all the time. You can always keep your old one as a second computer for a child, or sell it on eBay for cheap.
