I dont believe you will be able to replace ONLY the CPU.. in order to upgrade.. you would more than likely have to upgrade the CPU as well as the motherboard... .. then upgrading motherboards... you will likely have to upgrade RAM as well.. unless you can find a motherboard that supports your current type of ram..

What type of acer aspire t180 do you have?

Here is my personal best suggestion...

buy a barebones system... and move all of your current hardware to this new system...

the reason why i suggest this.. is because.. occasionally.. companies make their towers and motherboards... so that you cannot put in another type of motherboard... they wont line up correctly.. and so on...

I just found this by searching on pricewatch

http://www.barebonekit.net/customkititems.asp?kc=DTBBFXC661P4540

then change the Ram to 2gb and it makes the total $198..

now you have a 3.2ghz Pentium 4 pc.. with 2gb of ram... and a tower... it has onboard video.. and sound i believe... so all you would need to do is move your hard drive/cdrom videocard etc over... if you need a new videocard.. search pricewatch.com... good deals there...

The best you can do with a socket 754 is the Athlon 64 3700+. Its clocked at 2.4Ghz. Only way to go faster is a newer motherboard. Hope you find this answers your question and best of luck to you!

I want to upgrade from a AMD Sempron processor 2800+ 1.6GHz 192MB to a faster AMD processor with more RAM. I have an Acer 3002LC laptop. Can you advise me what CPU will support this...

My advice to you is to purchase a faster/newer laptop.

A new processor plus labour to install the CPU will cost a substantial amount of money and the performance gain will be marginal. Also RAM bottle neck come into affect as 192mb of RAM is not going to cut it, now-days you need at least 2GB of it. I myself prefer AMD their new AMD Athlon 2 X2 CPUs perform really well.

Hi Paul,

Correct, you have to use the same type, but you can upgrade to a faster CPU.

According to the specs for your computer it can take the following:

AMD Sempron processor 2600+ to 3300+, 333MHz FSB
AMD Athlon processor 2800+ to 3200+, 400MHz FSB

See:

http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/desktop/0000/Acer/AspireT135/AspireT135sp2.shtml

The Athlon's are better...faster Bus. The Sempron is cheaper.

The 2 processors you describe are very similar. The difference between the 2 is that the first one is capable of running 64-bit operating systems and applications. The second one is strictly for 32-bit systems.

The next question will probably be, "What do I have?" Probably a 32-bit system. You can go with the 64-bit CPU and be safe as it can run both. You can see what your old one is by the revision number on the top of the CPU. You can use the following comparison chart to see the differences:

Sempron 3100+ Comparison

I hope this has been some help. Maybe it has just caused more questions. Just ask.

Thanks for using Fixya.

please purchase the processor that is compatible to your motherboard. if the motherboard can be upgrade to a higher speed of processor then purchase it. if not, stick to the required specs. if you still want to upgrade, replace the motherboard, processor and the memory.

Can I upgrade my 1Ghz processor to a faster 2 or 3Ghz? I have an EliteGroup 741GX-M, socket 462 desktop with an AMD sempron

yes, it is possible, but the Front side bus will limit the functionality so much that it wouldn't be worth it.

1 Ok now that i found the spec for your computer here we go you can install the amd 64 x2 but not Phenom x4 9950

2 As for the graphic card you seem to know a little about computers so you can install and pci express x 16 graphics card that only needs one slot but remember some need power and this mean you my have to upgrade your power supply. So really you can by any single slot pci express graphics card for your computer so it comes down to how much you want to spend.
3.Ok for ram your max will be 4 gbs most likely ddr2 which mean that you have 4 ram spot in your computer.
hope this help please vote for me.

Processor upgrade

Need to look at the motherboard specs along with the processor "Socket". It will usually be a 754 or 939 depending on what your motherboard says. I wouldn't try too fast and set yourself up for disappointment. I would upgrade the RAM before the processor.
