Access built in owners manual.

I have a IBM R51 notebook. The only owners manual available is built in. I cannot get the Blue "Access IBM button to work. How do you shut off the wireless function. I have it hooked directly to the Cable modum.

If you just want to disable the wireless lan, you can go to the control panel, network connections, and right-click on the wireless connection icon. Click on "Disable". Re-enable it by going to the same place and click on "Enable".
In order for the "Access IBM" button to work you have to have the software installed. You can tell if it's installed by looking on the start menu under programs

IBM thinkpad R51 won't boot and the blue screen with unmountable-boot-volume comes up and i cannot bypass it.

Sounds like at least a corrupted OS, but most likely a bad hard drive. I'd try reloading Windows (if that's your OS) first, which should take well under an hour; if reloading takes excessively long, then the system is probably having a hard time formatting the hard drive due to physical bad sectors and the easiest thing would be to replace it. The R51 uses good old ATA/IDE 2.5" 9mm height hard drives, which are not available in most stores any longer, but you can probably get the same size or larger ones on eBay for pretty cheap and replace it yourself. Expect to pay about 50 cents to 75 cents per gigabyte - anything more would be considered tourist prices...

I have an R51. Sometimes when it is closed it will go into sleep mode and will not wake up after reopened. Also the Access IBM button does not seem to be working.

it maybe caused the system is too heat or the battery is not charge well (your battery is not good)
if the system is too heat you can buy some thermal paste, put it on your processor
if it cause your battery consider to replace it

You need to download and install the correct drivers for the ThinkPad R51 which are freely available here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-55029.html

Blue Screen on R51

You will need to do a clean install of your operating system from the disks supplied with your computer, and then immediately afterward, supply yourself with some means of backup of your precious files, which if you have not already performed previous backups are, alas, gone.

Suggest that the backup method be a large external drive where you can store several copies of disk images for your laptop, which will prevent future data loss.

Sorry.
