Question about Troy Bilt 5.5hp Self Propelled Mower

1 Answer

We just bought a Troy Bilt 6.75 self propelled mower. I have not used it yet myself, my husband has. He is out of town and I am having trouble starting. It does not have a primer or choke. Is there something else i need to do besides pull the cord?

There are two. 1 for the blade and 1 for the forward motion. I have held them both.

  • schemmel1 May 12, 2009

I have added fuel. It doesn't have a choke. I'm just thinking that maybe my arms are too short for the pull cord.

Below is the decscription of the mower from Lowes. I'm going to give it another try. I just thought that I was missing something obvious. I don't know where he put the manual. No worries. Thanks for your help anyway.

Briggs & Stratton 675 Series no-choke, no-prime engine for very easy starting
Single-speed front-wheel drive makes mowing easier
    Only at Lowe's
    Includes engine oil
    Fully assembled
Extended Protection Plans are available for an additional charge

Actually, when I went back outside, I noticed that the wire that inserts into the handle to raise and lower the blade had come out. It slips in and out easily and is part of the safety mechanism. The mower won't start unless the blade is raised. I put it back in and it started right up. Problem solved! Thanks for your comments.

why does my lawn mower smokes once I start it????
    any one ?????

That just means there is no separate choking mechanism you need to operate to start the engine -- it's marketing. Engines have to be choked by some me.

    But, okay, you're welcome, anyway.

I've never seen an engine without a choke and I've seen thousands. The throttle pushed all the way forward is the choke -- are you pushing the throttle all the way forward?

Is there an on/off switch on the engine somewhere?

Just how short are your arms?

  • Samuel Charles Spriggs May 11, 2010

I'm guessing the throttle pushed all the way forward is the choke -- are you setting the throttle in the choke position?

Silly question, but it does have fuel in the tank, right?

There may be a safety interlock handle you have to hold down to allow it to start. Are you holding that down when you pull the cord?

Read the manual for starting procedures, if you are following the stated procedures and the mower will not start then contact Lowes and explain the issue.
Depending on the store they may offer to have you bring it in so that they can see what may be the issue, if they are not interested in offering some customer service after purchase they will give you a 1-800-TUF-LUCK number to find a servicing dealer. A brand new mower should not be difficult to start even for those with short arms. I have the same mower except non propelled and it has been the best starting mower I've ever owned for the five years since purchase. I have always found it best to deal with a local hardware store or dealer when purchasing items such as chain saws, mowers or other outdoor power equipment, I pay a few more dollars (and I do mean a few) but the direct customer service is well worth every extra penny!

Husband says thinks it is starter cable has stretched and needs new one...does this sound correct and how to install it on Troybilt self-propelled push mower?

I'd love to help you, but I think you need to rephrase your question. There is no "Starter Cable" on this mower. Sorry.

Own a Troy Bilt self-propelled model #12A-466-M011 for a year now. It worked great when first got it. Now it will not clear the grass underneath so cuts off every 15 feet and have to manually clear grass...

I had the same problem with my Troy-Bilt self propelled lawn mower. You have to use the grass catcher if your grass is high. Also, I mowed wet grass and it made my belt slip off the pulley and created a new problem, somowing wet grass is definitely not a good idea.

How do you remove the gears on a front wheel self propelled troy bilt push mower?

Take the front tires off, pull gears and take out pins, put tires back on and you have a "non-self propell" mower.

Can't find the oil drain plug on Troy Bilt with 5.5 Honda engine

You may want to look under the deck. They sometimes put them there. And if it is a self propelled, you will probably need to remove or loosen the plastic cover that protects the self propelled belt.

You are looking for a nickel sized plug that has a square peg. Use an extension piece for a socket set if you don't have the proper plug removal tool.

Troy bilt mower self propelled 21". Belt has come off

Take the three screws out of the belt cover. One screw in behind each back wheel. The other is under the mower near the shaft to blade. Remove the tension spring off the transmission. Then remove blade and the cover comes off. You then can put the belt back on. Sounds like fun don't it!
