Mac book, how to shut off built in camera

My friend has a mac laptop. His camera comes on that is built in. He bought a new camera to plug in and he can't get his built in cam to shut off so the new camera works.

Clarification. We use a chat program that is built in software . You use your browser:

    http://www.filmon.com/chat.html

Once you log in, the mac book allows you to use the internal cam to send video of yourself. That's too close for some. My friend bought a small mac supported video camera for about $50. He installed the camera yet it still shows the internal camera working. He didn't know how to shut it off so the new camera, which is about 4 feet away, will start sending video instead of the built in.

I have a pc and it allows you to just plug and play any camera you wish. He was just trying to figure out how to disable the internal camera and allow the new one to work.. I appreciate your answer so quickly and will show him this answer. Being a mac user, he'll understand it.. many thanks.

You have to disable the camera:
    Disabling the built-in iSight Camera

    1. First, we will create a relatively hidden backup folder for the file. If you don’t want the folder hidden from the GUI, just remove the . in front of the directory name. Launch the Terminal and type the following command:
      mkdir /System/Library/QuickTime/.iSightBackup
    2. Next, we will move the QuickTime component that allows the iSight to be accessed into the backup directory we just created. Type the following command:
      mv /System/Library/QuickTime/QuickTimeUSBVDCDIgitizer.component /System/Library/QuickTime/.iSightBackup/
(In case it’s not clear, there is a space between the two directory paths)
    3. That’s pretty much it, if you want to enable the iSight again, simply move the QuickTimeUSBVDCDIgitizer.component file back into the main QuickTime directory at /System/Library/QuickTime/

Now any program that attempts to access the iSight will be unable to, instead the user will get the familiar message that the iSight hardware is already in use by another program. If you’d rather avoid the command line, you can follow the same rough instructions above but using Command-Shift-G in the Finder to access the ‘Go’ command. The only downside to doing it through the Finder is that you can not create an ‘invisible’ directory to place the file in, so you’ll have to put the component elsewhere.

My webcam is not wking on my mac book pro ,it says device not connected

Thank you for contacting FixYa Support, I am glad to assist.

The best way to check if your iSight camera is working is to launch the built-in Mac OS X chat application, iChatAV and under Preferences check the video setting and see if the video will activate the built-in iSight camera.

As iChatAV is the defacto application to use and check video settings, if you cannot get the device to work, then you will more than likely need to take your Macbook in for at least a diagnostics to have your iSight camera checked.

This iSight is a built-in device, that if not working, as an internal device for your Macbook Pro, it can only be checked by a certified Mac technician.

If you are referring to an external web camera connected to your Macbook Pro, however, please feel free to reply back to this post and specify the model you have and we will be glad to assist you with that product.

Regards,

My daughter says her built in Isight camera is only showing black. This happened one time before and I found a fix online that was a couple of keystrokes but cant find it now...she has taken the battery...

1.) Shut down the system completely, remove the battery, and disconnect the power adapter.
2.) Press and hold the power button on the laptop for a few seconds. This drains all the power lingering in your Mac.
3.) Re-insert the battery and power adapter (if you were using it before), and turn your Mac back on as your normally would.

Did you happen to get a cd with thyat icecam? if so, then you need to uninstall it, unplug it from your mac book. and using the cd driver, run the installation again and plug it back into your mac book. another thing that you might want to do is to run up manually for your mac book. sometimes the drivers for the usb ports need to be updated.

What courses the hard drive to file on a mac book pro laptop.

Hi Stephanie
This is one of those questions that's virtually impossible to answer, it could be anything.
Your best option is to take to a mac specialist (the dealer where you bought it) or to an Apple Store if you have one near by.
It may not need a new hard drive, it may just be corrupted and need sorting out. On the other hand it could have failed mechanically and will need to be replaced - check your warranty. There have been a number of reports of HDs failing in some models and Apple have replaced them free of charge as there was a manufacturing fault at the HD factory that didn't come to light until the drives had been running for about a year.
You have been using Time Machine to back up your work haven't you?
