This is an old machine that does not interface with a network or a PC.. There is a reset proceedure that someone showed me a several years ago. You hold the Clear Stop key down while turning on the power. It causes the machine to go through some kind of a reset process. The little leds go around in a circle while this is happening. I have done this with no success in resolving the problem.

When you try to make a copy, it picks up the paper moves it about 3/4 inch, then stops and gives you a P.C error message. This message means that it is out of paper or a jam has occured in the pick up area. You can remove the paper sheet that was picked up, hit the Clear Stop button which resets the machine and you can try to make another copy. For some time it did this on the first attempt, but would then work correctly, but now you get the same thing every time.

It seems like maybe there is a sensor that detects the out of paper condition, and it is malfunctioning, causing it to always detect that even when paper is present. The paper that feeds is not jammed in any way, it just is picked up, moves 3/4 inch, then stops.

The suggestion that I received did not resolve the problem. Perhaps someone with older experience may be familiar with this machine and have a suggestion.

  • bernieZ May 13, 2009

Lee I have tried cleaning the rollers involved but had no luck. While the machine is old, it does not have that many miles on it. It is in a small home office. I have another more up to date printer, but this old black and white toner machine was a lot less expensive to run and it has zoom capabilities that most newer machines don't have. So I am trying to find someone who may have had some actual experience with this particular model and may know what the difficulty is that is causing this problem. It still copies fine if you hand feed the paper.

I am still looking for a solution. I think it is a sensor of some sort. Does anyone have a solution other than it is just old and worn out?

  • bernieZ May 14, 2009

I do not hace a problem fixing the P.C error message. You just press the stop clear button. The problem is that the machine picks up the paper moves it 3/4 of an inch and then stops. P.C means that it is out of paper or there is a paper jam. Neither is the case, but the machine thinks it is.

There is no connection to a computer of any sort. This is a basic copier.

  • bernieZ May 14, 2009

Yes, I have a manual. I have been through it, but cannot find anything that would help with this problem

  • bernieZ May 14, 2009

Powering it off for a while did not do anything. I don't think this machine has software, just electronic controls. The only display on it is just an LED field.

  • bernieZ May 18, 2009

    Thanks, I will try these.

  • bernieZ May 19, 2009

I finally got it to work some of the time. Don't know what did it but thanks for your help.

  • bernieZ May 19, 2009

I was finally able to get it to work some of the time, buy pushing the paper. Not sure what did it but thanks for all of your suggestions.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

To my understanding, the reset you mentioned refers to ""Toning up Procedure" which requires to press and hold down the CLEAR / STOP button while turning the power on. Thereafter, toner/developer ratio can be changed in the choice mode.

To your concern and as you posted, error code "PC" refers to either:

  • paper feed; or
  • no paper.
The paper feed, you have partially addressed when they were cleaned and since not that much usage doubtful if it is wear & tear.

While I am not particularly familiar with the EP21XX series or with most Minolta models for that matter, common problem in some other brands/models would be the paper sensor. You may want to consider that possibility. While not really defective, it would, over time, have accumulated dust and paper particles that may be interfering with its function. A can of compressed air using the nozzle tube to direct the air in between the small spaces should do the job. Exercising the sensor protruding portion where the stack of paper sits on would also help. Should you be able to have access to the moving parts, a bit of WD40 would also help.

Additionally, it might not be a bad idea to invest in a service manual. The only one I could readily find is Intravia's Service Guides 5th Edition.

Hope that this be of additional information and perhaps something that you could give a try. Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Hi there.
It sounds to me like the rubber rollers that grab and feed the paper are just about worn or the teeth has worn too, as you say in your post its quite an old machine so common sense would dictate that this may be the problem.
If you have done so already i would suggest you look inside for any foreign objects, clean the feed rollers with rubbing alcohol and try to feed paper through again and if you have the option use the printers software to clean the heads and print a test page.
If after all this it still won't feed through i would consider buying a new printer as a repair job by a technician could cost as much as new printer.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

    Hi Bernie.
Yes i have experience with printers that don't feed properly, i had an old lexmark that wouldn't feed by itself, when i took it apart i found that one of the teeth on the cog that grabs the paper had broken so i had to hand feed the paper into it, apart from that the printer worked great, i suggest you have a look in that area to see if that could be the case.
Please post back if you need more help in this matter.

    regards

Hi,

This is something which is controlled from the software . The printer prints as instructed by the computer installed application. I would therefore request you to verify or recheck or undo any settings changes that you might have dones recently .

For detailed installation of a fresh software please follow the instruction provided in the manual.

Try two things:

Fan the paper before placing in the tray.

Raise the humidity in the room to at least 40% to avoid electrostatic sticking of the paper. Store paper in 40% humidity area.

best guess is it belongs under the paper lift plate in your paper tray, remove the paper tray and all the paper, there should be a metal paper lift plate in the paper tray, these are typically spring loaded to lift the paper into place. lift the plate and check the underside for the location of the spring, there is usually a retainer of some sort to hold the spring in place. once the spring is in place the tray should feed correctly.

Hope this is of some help.

HP 4200 printer paper jam. No paper is jammed

OK, if the printer says jam but no paper inside and prints after you open and close the cover the paper likely never made it out of the tray. Or the machine thinks the page never made it out of the machine.
As far as input check your rollers 1 in the tray and the pick up roller in the machine if you don't have alot of pages on the machine these likely OK.
Next (and this I have found often) check the paper back stop in the tray. This is the guide to set the length of paper. If it is set just a little long the roller cannot catch the edge of the paper. Sometimes the teeth the guide sets in are broken or worn.
The output would be the sensor in the fuser replace fuser.
Hope this helps

Sounds like either a loose drive connection or there is some trace piece of paper still left in the device.

BNe sure not to overload or UNDERload the tray as well.
