Re: I have a gateway Profile 5. when i cut it on
My understanding is that when you power on your PC, the POST is succesful, but then the system hangs.? If i am correct. There are several reasons this may happen.
1) Boot record corrupt S) Reformat the harddrive and re-install operating system / replace hard drive
2) General Hard drive failure but boot record instact S) Replace Hard drive
3) Operating system inoperative S) Re-install operating system
Most pre-built systems come with recovery disks, you may try this as a solution if available.
When replacing a defective hard drive, or partialy inoperable hard drive, a good policy is to change the drive to slave, and install the new drive as master, this way any data you may be able to recover, can be done after the new hard drive is installed, and an operating system is installed on the new drive.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

bonannorl, Maybe it can be fixed. You did not give any history of unit. Only "now" stuff. Is unit covered by Gateway warranty? How old is unit? Date of manufacture? Did unit work fine connected to your pc and this black or black n blank screen thing suddenly happen? Is screen also BLANK? Have you swapped-in old monitor to prove PC is OK? Your CCFL back-lit lcd monitor no different than any other brand in it's basic design and operation. Get into my fixya profile and read some of my testimonials and solutions to black or black n blank screen problems to help in your decision to DIY fix or contract out needed repair work. Most likely 2485w has problem with it's internal "switch-mode-power-supply"/"ccfl inverter supply"!! Let me know more info about unit.
12fixlouie on fixya.
joaye, First place to look would be the monitor's "switch-mode-power-supply" and /or the INVERTER circuit. When strange things start to occur with LCD monitor's w/CCFL backlighting, the first place to look would be the internal or external SMPS for the unit. You should be careful in your third use of the word "BLANK". Some monitors will be BLACK and not BLANK! Some will be both BLACK and BLANK. Read more Black screen stuff in my profile and you will understand WHY your unit is behaving like it is and some useful options you and other's like you have. Also visit www.ccl-la.com/badcaps.htm and www.lcdparts.com or YOUTUBE for videos on lcd repair or lcd monitor disassembly FYI DIY type stuff. I'm 12fixlouie on fixya.
exchange your dell monitor to gateway monitor. If the monitor from dell showed the same problem when you connect it to gateway. you must install video card driver. and if the monitor from gateway showed the same problem when you connect it to dell adjust your contrast to full and the brightness to 50% and adjust the colors to 100%

If the video card is an "onboard type" Is is not easy to replace. If you have a seperate video card, you may replace it with a like type, PCI, AGP,PCIe,etc. or if you computer has an open slot a video card can be added and turn off the "onboard video" in start up screen BIOS .
Since this is a GATEWAY(I do not know the model) computer you also always have the option of a complete restore .
Below is their website to download al the info:
You could have a bad "inverter" or flourescent backlight tube, or a problem in your power supply. The only way to isolate the problem is to check each component in sequence. If your hard disk and DVD / CD drive are still working when your screen goes dark, then I'd say it's the "inverter". You'll have to take it to a repair shop.
