Question about KLH R3100 Receiver

Klh r7000 no sound

I have a klh # r7000  with no sound in any mode. tried plugging in different speakers, no difference

I also have a KLH R-3100 receiver. The panel lights and the tuner seems to be working; the speaker relay seems to close normally, but... no sound comes from any speaker. If "balance" control is turned all the way--either way--the unit shuts itself off. It's probably burned out power transistor(s) plus whatever else they took down with them.

I need a service manual or schematic. Anyone know where I can get one?

I know this unit is probably economically "totalled," but I would like to try to fix it. Please don't just suggest that I add it to my local landfill!

    I Just fixed this problem:
The Klh R7000 has a single sided circuit board and is 'cost reduced & fragile'

I have an Electronics engineering background; so, I approached the problem different.
I checked the power supplies for the PA and then the power supplies for the 144 pin surface mounted chip. There are 3 and they are on a heat sink. They were fine.

The SMT IC selects the audio source and provides tone balance and volume control.

My power supplies were fine and having fixed similar problems in the past: I recognized the 3 wire serial interface between the socketed microprocessor and the 144 pin SMT IC.

Using a Lamp and shining it thru the boar you can see 3 control lines grouped together.

I carefully removed the micro and cleaned the leads and carefully re-seated it in the socket, then I re-flowed the 3 resistors and jumpers involved in the 3 wire serial interface.

So I would re-flow the regulators on the heat sink too.

    But mine works again
But be warned the PCB is 'cost reduced & fragile'

SOURCE: klh r7000 no sound

Like I wrote, I had a similar problem with popping and then no audio for an extended period of time. I found the solution on another site, http://dexsoft.com/blog/?p=15

Apparently the solder joints are weak, and just as the blog described when I opened up the receiver I saw the same scorch marks from overheating. Just as the blog described, I added solder to each of the joints in the photo and have had no problem ever since.

I am no solder expert, this is my 2nd time, but all I did is build up each of the joints and I have been listening to music, playing movies in surround sound with no problems, no popping for the last 2 weeks.

I have a KLH 700watt home theater reciever that wont stay on!!

Sounds like it is overheating. Try one or all of the following:

Remove anything that may be stored on top of it. Unblock the vents.

Connect speakers with a higher sensitivity rating.

Move it to an area where it has more airflow around it, ie; not in a closet or cabinet.

Disable any bass-boost and equalization, or tone controls.

Set any crossover settings for any subwoofer you may have connected, to a higher frequency.

Decrease your listening volume.

Audio receiver!

When I watch movies, most of the talking is directed to the center speaker. During surround sound, this gives a more realistic environment, with voices coming from the source (center where your tv is) and ambeint noise coming from the left/right corners.

Get a small center speaker to solve your problem.
