My Dell Inspiron 6400 (Windows XP Home) won't reboot. It's giving me a "Loading PBR for descriptor 1 ... done" line on a black screen. What can I do to fix it. Can I salvage my content / files

Before you use the Recovery CD you need to backup your data because to restoring your laptop will wipe your data off the hard disk.
To backup your data when you cannot boot up your laptop, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter. Connect this hard drive/USB adapter into the USB port of a working computer. The computer will see it as an external storage device, you can then open the folders and backup your data.
You can then fit the hard drive back into the Dell laptop and boot up with the Dell recovery CD to reinstall Windows etc.

Xp crashed

When xp doesnt boot up and tells you that "following file is mising or corrupt"
just put your winxp cd in, reboot, startup recovery console and type chkdsk. This will start scandisk and after checking your drive and fixing errors you reboot and evrything should be fine. By the way try typing help in the recovery console for more commands if you want to..

last but d least call to hardware professional and reinstall new operating system..

Gateway nothing displayson the screan thescreen freezes when the window displays i cant reboot or nothen it crashed hard

HI, Regarding this issue with the computer not booting to Windows, please press the F8 as soon as you reboot the computer you would get a black screen that says "ADVANCED BOOT OPTIONS" from here you would find an option that says "SAFE MODE" please use the up and down arrow keys and highlight this option and see if you are able to get into Windows in the safe mode.If you are able to boot into safe mode then we can restore the settings of the computer to an earlier date for which please click on Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore. You would get the System restore window from where you need to select an earlier date wherein the computer was working fine and then the computer would reboot and you should be able to get the computer to work.

You would probly want to completely reformat and reinstall your copy of XP, if it is already crashing on a fresh copy, it most likely didn't install correctly. Make sure you format first. You can do this before you run your installation. Reboot your computer and hit f8, select the option that says command prompt with networking. when the screen comes up with the C: type in there vol you will need the volume label to format, it will display this for you and make a note of it. At the next C: type in there C: format it will ask you to enter the volume label, do this and hit enter. It will then ask you if you are sure you want to delete all data, type y and hit enter. It will go through the format process. Enter your XP cd into the drive and reboot your computer, you should now be able to reinstall windows with no previous errors or versions already installed. Hope this helps!

Cant activate windows xp home edition

Hi

Try and see what the BSOD says , when it suddenly reboots. Press F8 until it gives you a menu , go to advanced options or something similar highlight don't reboot or restart automatically.

Can you start your PC in safe mode. Try a crack although I wouldn't recommend it.

My computer had some problems so i rebooted it but when the windows xp logo came in it suddenly stops and starts making weird noises. It also happened before i rebooted when i watch some videos online.

Sounds like your hard drive is crashing or has crashed. You will most likely need to get a new hard drive and reinstall Windows on it. I hope you have your important files backed-up.
