Question about Compaq (158165-001) DVD Drive
My husband does not want our son to use the lap top to watch DVDs because he says it is not what a computer is really designed for, and it is likely the DVD drive will not last long and be expensive to replace. My son maintains that computers now are designed to play DVDs, and there should be no problem with using it often and no reason to think this will cause the DVD drive to need to be replaced. Can you settle this argument?
The life of the DVD drive depends on the quality of the lens and how it is used.If lots of local cds and dvds are used in that dvd drive then it really affects the life of the lens. Also dvds which has scratches and other deffects in the reading side will make the lens to strain more to read the content in the disc.If clean discs and branded discs are used in the drive its life will be long enough.I have a drive which is working for the past 10 years. So if the drive is properly cared then it will last till you think to replace your laptop

I'm coming down on Dad's side here. There are portable DVD players made to withstand the constant opening and closing of the DVD tray. Laptops have somewhat flimsy trays that have a finite shelf life. During normal use the DVD drive will last as long as the computer but constant DVD use will surely ruin the DVD drive and need repair. Every thing's more expensive to replace on a laptop.I hope this settles your argument and best of luck to all of you!
