Caloric gas stove prestige series

I tried to set the clock and while doing so (no manual) The oven no longer works.  The pilot light works but the oven won't light.  The broiler works.

Someone told me it had something to do with the timers not being set right.

HELP PLEASE

i need to change my gas range from natural gas to work with porpane gas. what part must i change.

  • Mike Martin Aug 15, 2008

Hi I just recently have started to have the same problem. The broiler in the oven works. The range top works. The oven takes forever to light. When it does ( if it does), it never gets to temp ( for the sake of discussion) say 350F. In looking at it further, the oven burner will light and it seems that it goes off shortly after it starts.

I have seen notes about the timer being improperly set. However, I must apologize, I am not quite sure what that really means. I would really appreciate some input.

Thank you and have a great day.

To jenna 12 Does your stove have a stop and start timer? When you set your clock you may have inadvertantly moved the stop or start time on that timer. Check them, if they have knobs for setting the stop and start time, make sure the pointer is pointing to the current time and that the knob is popped out and not stuck in. when you have it right both the stop and the start knob should be out, not pushed in. They will pop out when you turn them to the current time.

These timers allow you to start something cookin at a time delayed several hours. this means they will not allow the oven to come on until it hits that time that you may have set in error.

If your stove has a digital stop and start timer check each one so that both show the current time, then your oven should light.

To get your manual go to: http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/

If you have a timer issue, simply open your circuit breaker for the stove and then turn it back on. That should fix the clock issue and get you running.

When i turn on oven all i smell is gas i cleaned with a wire brush still nothing. also is the pilot light always have to be on and can you see it when oven is off

Most gas ovens that aren't electronic ignition usually have a pilot light.
Usually one in the oven area and one for each burner. (Sometimes shared between two burners.)
These pilot lights must lit at all times...otherwise it won't light up and you'll smell gas.
Usually the pilot light is in the very back of the oven and can be seen with the broiler drawer opened.

There is a small set screw located at the pilot light assembly in the oven and also at every burner.
This allows you to adjust pilot light up or down, thereby letting you set pilot light flame to a level that doesn't get blown out by a draft...or you can turn it off completely.

If you use that set screw to turn off the pilot light gas, you'd need to strike a match to light the oven or burners everytime you needed them.

I have a 1965 gaffers & sattler wall oven with the oven on the top and the broiler on the bottom. It began having issues lighting even though the pilot light was on. Now the burner doesn't light up at...

My Mom has a 1965 Gaffler & Stattler Mark 21 wall mount oven, it had the "Same Problem", People may tell you that the flame switch is no longer avalible but I found a universal fit flame switch at Applance Parts Center, I took the old part in and had it matched up, with a minor modification to the thermal sensor mounting bracket, "drilling a larger hole and lightly crimping it", it's a perfect fit, "problem solved". You may want to try cleaning the pilot light area with a small wire brush first, if that dosn't work try a jumper wire on the two terminals of the flame switch, if that works then replace the flame switch.
This operation can be done without removing the oven from the wall mount, just remove the two screws from the panel at the inside rear of the broiler, you will find the flame switch behind the panel it has two screws two wires a thermo leed and a sensor tip that goes up to the thermo sensor mounting bracket above the pilot light, the thermo sensor mounting bracket has one screw and a nut behind it, you will also need to remove one end of the 1/4" pilot gas pipe in order to remove the thermo sensor mounting bracket, When your done puting it back togather, check for gas leaks using soapy water in a spray bottle, a dish soap solution works great, also check your vent pipe connections.
After I cleaned the dust and grease out of this old thing, the 45 year old clock and timer started working again.
My Mom is very happy, try and find new oven to fit the cutout and vent, we saved a lot of $$$,
"Good Luck".

Gas oven(tappen) with broiler draw. oven will not light, no pilot

if this is fairly new, there is a hot surface ignitor near the back of the burner in the bottom part of the oven. This can go bad. There is a connector that can be pulled apart where the ignitor meets the wiring harness. Ohm out the ignitor or have someone with a meter ohm it out. There should be resistance and not open. If open the ignitor should be replaced. If you have a broiling element, turn that on. If the broil element comes on then the ignitor is almost for sure the problem.

Burners on gas stove work but oven and broiler not working

Most ovens, unless they have an electric igniter (does it go tick tick tick when plugged in and turned on? If so, it has an electic ignition.) have a pilot light. In order to keep gas from flowing out, and to prevent a possible explosion when the pilot light has gotten put out, they have an electric thermocouple on them that shuts off the gas when it gets cold. Plug the cord back in, and relight your pilot light by holding the lighter (I recommend a fireplace match or bbq lighter, not a cigarette lighter to prevent singed knuckle hairs!) over the thermocouple for a couple of minutes.
