I have a Nikon D80 and use the Nikkor 18-200mm VR. I have the same problem. It started not autofocusing correctly. It would capture images that were unfocused and then ones where the image looked dark in the viewfiner but ended up being white in the captured image. Now it doesn't focus and doesnt capture images. The camera/lens makes a whirring sound upon turning it on, like as if the lens was trying to adujst/focus but is blocked. There is an "err" and when I try to take pictures, the shutter seems to make a noise and go but it is not the exactly the stronger sound of when an image is actually captured. So I am not capturing any images. Once out of ever maybe 30-40 attempts, it will capture one image but this is one that has caused the auto flash to pop out and it will only happen 1 time. So it will work very seldomly but only with the flash over the past 2 days. Manual focus does not seem to work either.

Here are two things to do while on vacation.

Be sure lens is set to M/A
Set camera to "green auto button" on top of camera.

Hopefully, that will get you back to working.

How do you shut off auto focus on camera?

The focus mode selector switch is on the front of the camera, just below the lens release button. Switch it to the "M" position for manual focus, "AF" for autofocus.

I have a Nikon D70 (with a 18-55mm lens) and have always used it in Auto mode. It suddenly stopped working in auto mode...won't take the picture at all. Did I break the lens??? If I tip the camera back...

Hi tina549, do any of your other lens auto focus? If so then it may be this lens. If they do not then look on the right side of the lens mount (with camera facing you) there is the AF and M switch. Something to try is clean the electrical contacts on both the D70 and the lens. When I had a D70s the auto focus was giving me fits, worked sometimes then it did not so I traded it for the D80. The 18-55 lens is a nice lens however, it is not the most robust of lens.

That's just the quirky autofocus of the d80. Try tilting the camera diagonally to focus and tilting back up to shoot.
Unfortunately, autofocus issues like those are the difference between a d80 and a d200/d300 :/

Nikon Auto focus problem with the 18-135 KIT lense

I had this problem and just realised it today. I found out that it was a a settings problem. What I had done without realising was I had my "AE-lock" button functioning as "AF-ON" which meant that my autofocus would only turn on when I held the shutter half-way and pressed that button. Once I turned this function back to its original state of "AF-Lock" as opposed to "AF-ON", it worked fine.
My symptoms were: • soft mechanical noise when holding the shutter (i thought it was trying to focus but couldn't. I thought the mechanics for the AF were faulty) • Couldn't take photos unless they were in the set conditions (which makes sense because it was locked on a certain setting until I pressed the AF-ON button).
My camera is only a few months old so I wasn't convinced it was faulty/broken. Make sure you test all of your settings and go through each of them before you chalk it down to equipment error.
Hope this helps.

Nikon D80 auto focus

I had the same problem but then I realized the lens was not "in" all the way.  It had not clicked into place when I changed lenses.  This might work for you....it did for me.
