SOURCE: 03 silverado turn the key to start but starter will not engage

Interesting problem, on the starter is a "trigger" wire that originates from the ignition (may run to the power distribution center). When the truck is started 12 volts runs down that wire and activates the solinoid on the starter. Put a 12 volt test light on the trigger wire by the starter, have someone hit the key to start, test light should come on, if not chase wire back and look for a break in the wire or replace trigger wire.

SOURCE: starter starts...engine dosn't crank...starter dosn't stop.

Hi

An unusual one here !

Suspect the problem lies in the starter solenoid.

But most strange a for constant live feed with ignition off.

May possibly be more a relay problem ?

Good Luck

John.

P.S. Don´t forget to give me a rating please !

Intermittently there is a problem starting the car. The key turns on all the electrics but when turned further it does not engage the starter.

Check your ignition switch electrical side
Check the relay
Or the starter motor itself must be playing up

2005 GMC Envoy XL. Will not engage starter. Like something electrical. Turn key and nothing. Worked fine until now.

Could be the neutral safety switch if it won't crank in neutral or park, could also be the starter has failed.

Starter wont engage

Could be the switch, the solenoid, or the starter. You would need to check for power at the starter post each time the key switch is in the start position. You can hook up a test light or a meter to watch it.

Starter wont engage

either the starter is not kicking out its gear to meet the flywheel or the flywheel has missing teeth. either way the next step is to remove the starter so it can be tested outside of the vehicle and the flywheel can be looked at through the hole where the starter sat.

It sounds like you have a bad actuator. This is attached to the starter and has a solonoid that pushes the starter motor gears into the engine gear. If the solonoid is faulty this may happen. Also check alignment of the same.

2004 ion won't start. Lights work. When I turn key don't get series of clicks, get one snap.

That symptom usually means the solenoid on the starter is bad and no longer is completing the circuit to engage the starter. A new starter will likely solve that issue. A series of rapid clicks would indicate a week battery. You can try repeatedly turning the key to the start position rapidly, sometimes the starter wil start working. You can also try tapping the starter while somebody holds the key in the start position, if the starter engages place it.

Freelander unable to start at turn of key,

Does the starting solenoid engages? This is would sound like a deep clunk on your starter. When the solenoid engages it close the contact that energize the starter motor, but a worn contact on the solenoid would result in it engaging but not having enough current to turn the engine resulting in a clunking noise when you try to start.
The starter solenoid gets its 12 volt from a relay. This is referred to as the starter relay. If you try to crank, and you hear only a click but the starter do not turn, then the contacts on the relay maybe worn.
To sum it up, if you hear a loud clunk when it dont crank, its the starter solenoid. If you hear just a click but no crank, it could be the starter relay.
