Bottom line I cannot get my mic to work on my hp laptop i have conexant audio system 221 there is no line in facility and it seems the mic is muted by default, There is no box to tick unmute and i want to use it with a karaoke cd with my headset and microphone, also the same thing applies to Skype or Yahoo chat, unable to hear myself talking in the headset, though they can hear me and i can hear them.

  • dmwoodbridge May 15, 2009

THE PROBLEM IS THERE IS NO LINE IN FACILITY NOR A MUTE/UNMUTE FACILITY IN THE AUDIO SOUND RECORDING BOX. There is no documented way to enable the input audio monitor. As it turns out, there was apparently a group of people colluding in secret (recording industry and other large notebook manufactures) to limit copying of music... best I can tell because this functionality turned out to be DELIBERATELY disabled in my notebook's driver setup. Your answer does not solve the issue at stake.

  • dmwoodbridge May 15, 2009

Done that twice already and the issue still remains. Can you suggest any change I can make in the registry to overcome this problem, the main problem is the internal mic cannot be unmuted due to there not being a facility to enable that to be done.

  • dmwoodbridge May 15, 2009

ALL THAT IS ON THERE IS THE MICROPHONE THATS WHAT I AM TRYING TO TELL YOU, I AM NOT ALL THAT STUPID ALL OF THIS WAS DONE BEFORE I ASKED FOR HELP. THERE IS NOTHING ELSE ON THERE AND NO FACILITY TO UNMUTE THE MIC IT IS SET TO MUTE BY DEFAULT.

    Vista Home Edition 32bit

  • dmwoodbridge May 16, 2009

Thats absolute rubbish, if i did that my warranty would be invalid, HP already stated that the mic is muted by default and it's an issue they are looking at, it has nothing to do with soldering a short,

I've tried all the solutions I can think of...followed the trouble shooting
guide, but when I open up the Speaker Properties, and go to Levels to see if
my microphone is muted....all that's there is the volume level.....no phone line,
Line In, Aux, Microphone.... so please don't suggest fixes that are totally innapropriate, whats needed is registry change if i could find anything related to linein muted or mic muted then probab;ly that would suffice.

Go to the hp website and download the latest drivers for your laptop , audio, chipset drivers etc and put those onto a cd or a memory stick ( some storage device ) ready for the next part

reboot into safe mode and un install all the audio devices ( head phones software ) the lot !!

Re install the drivers in safe mode if possible and reboot , if not reboot back into normal mode and re install them there.

Once you have the correct drivers for your model of laptop from the hp site that should rectify that , obviously you will have to re install the drivers / software for your headphone set etc but the microsoft high defintion has obviously altered some critical settings which you are not aware of and wont know about and the best way to fix it is to un install it completely and re install the correct drivers.

You can edit the registry as much as you like but because you did not have filemon and regmon to hand you will never know what keys were changed and what there default values where or anything so you are most likely wasting your time in the registry.

Don't stress out about it as its not worth it.

If the above does not work then your best bet ( as it will most likely need it from time to time anyway ) is to backup your laptop ( data, etc ) and then just do a fresh install and re install the lot.

Obviously only doing that as a last resort

You are absolutely correct .that is no unmute option for internal mic option in the laptop.but if the mic section the assembly fitted in the latop ,if that is short or not working.the noise will not come from mic or from the head phone connected to the mic externally.i mean to say its not any software or driver or any false setting problem.its the hardware problem in the laptop.so just get your mic section circuit checked by a locval repair technician.there will be definately a minor short circuity in that circuit .due to that the mic is not working and supporting properly.it will just require a mini soldering job to be done by opening the laptop .this is common problem in many laptop ,the mic assembly gets short internally.
it will get started after this.the cost of soldering will be very negligible.this will help you.

thanks.please do rate the solution.thank you for using fixya.keep updated.

My mic is not working even other sound device is working i need mic software for presario c700

Here's the step-by-step how you may solve this;
To install audio / modem drivers, first download and install Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio (sp32646):

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp32501-33000/sp32646.exe

Conexant CX20549-12 Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows XP (sp36090.exe) (UAA Driver needed)

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp36001-36500/sp36090.exe

This will create a swsetup folder in C drive ("C:\sp36090")

Installing this driver may result in an error. But continue with the following steps to get the audio driver installed correctly.

1. Click on Start and select Run. Now type devmgmt.msc and press enter.

2. Right click on "Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus" and click Update driver.

3. Select "Install from a list or specific location"

4. Click Next. Then select "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install"

5. Click Next and then select "Sound, video and game controller" from the list.

6. Click Next and then click Have Disk.

7. Click Browse C:\sp36090 folder and select the .inf file (CpV30D5a) and click open and Continue with the onscreen instructions.

Conexant CX20548 Modem Driver for Microsoft Windows XP (sp36089.exe) (UAA Driver needed)

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp36001-36500/sp36089.exe

Download and install Conexant modem driver (sp36089). This will give error message and also will create a folder C:\swsetup\sp36089 which contains extracted driver files.

The same method which is used for installing audio driver needs to be followed for modem.

Hope this help.

Cannot find media device driver

Your Notebook is installed with High Definition audio card which XP cannot recognize by default. Installing Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) will allow XP to recognize High Definition audio cards.

Download the Microsoft UAA drivers for Windows XP form the link:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp33501-34000/sp33867.exe

Restart the Notebook after the UAA Drivers are installed.

Now, download Conexant High Definition Audio Drivers for your Notebook for XP :

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp34001-34500/sp34386.exe

You should be able to install the Audio Drivers without any issues.
