All my whites were white when they left the washer but gray when they came out of the dryer. I noticed this black carbon-like covering on the dryer door and lint filter so I took a Magic scrubber and got it off. I can't figure out where it is coming from. We have an unusually long dryer vent which I know is a problem, we clean it out twice a year. Our dryer develops black soot stains on the inside and the clothes are coming out gray. I just think the dryer gets too hot from the long reach of the dryer vent, but we would have to move the laundry room in order to vent elsewhere. Do boosters work?
Soot would mean lint is circulating around in your machine, and getting to the combustion area. Take the machine all apart and clean it thoroughly, including taking the cover off the fan and cleaning it too. A dirty fan will slow down the whole works. Check with your hardware store for a chimney-sweep's brush. I once bought one that could be tied to ropes and pulled up and down a flue. If they have a brush the right size, you could do that and really clean your dryer vent.
