Black carbon/soot on the door and lint filter of my dryer

All my whites were white when they left the washer but gray when they came out of the dryer. I noticed this black carbon-like covering on the dryer door and lint filter so I took a Magic scrubber and got it off. I can't figure out where it is coming from. We have an unusually long dryer vent which I know is a problem, we clean it out twice a year. Our dryer develops black soot stains on the inside and the clothes are coming out gray. I just think the dryer gets too hot from the long reach of the dryer vent, but we would have to move the laundry room in order to vent elsewhere. Do boosters work?

Soot would mean lint is circulating around in your machine, and getting to the combustion area. Take the machine all apart and clean it thoroughly, including taking the cover off the fan and cleaning it too. A dirty fan will slow down the whole works. Check with your hardware store for a chimney-sweep's brush. I once bought one that could be tied to ropes and pulled up and down a flue. If they have a brush the right size, you could do that and really clean your dryer vent.

Instructions

Dryer Does Not Turn On
1

Ensure that the dryer's power supply cord is firmly plugged into an electrical outlet.
2

Inspect the structure's fuse box for a tripped fuse. Each fuse is assigned a single "On/Off" switch. If any fuse switch is in the "Off" position, flip that switch to the "On" position. If the problem persists, contact a professional electrician.

3

Press the "Start/Stop" button on the left side of the dryer's control panel.
4

Close the dryer door firmly so that the door clicks into place. The dryer will not operate if the door is not shut.
Lint Filter
5

Clean the lint filter. Twist the program selector knob on the control panel to the "Off" position, then open the dryer door. Pull the lint filter out of the dryer. The lint filter is located at the front of the dryer's tumbler, and is inserted vertically into the dryer. Gently stroke your hand over the filter to clear the lint, then reinsert the filter and close the door.
6

Turn the dryer off and allow at least 30 minutes for the dryer to cool, as excessive heat can cause a drying program malfunction.
7

Increase the ventilation of the room the dryer is located in, such as by opening a door or window. Excessive heat will cause the dryer to automatically turn off until it cools as a safety measure. Increasing the ventilation will help keep the dryer cool.
Clothing Not Fully Dry
8

Clean the moisture sensor. Open the dryer door to access the moisture sensor. The black-colored sensor consists of two bars, and is located at the front of the dryer's tumbler, to the left of the lint filter. The sensor should be cleaned with a clean cloth and white vinegar once per month.
9

Clean the lint filter. Twist the program selector knob on the control panel to the "Off" position, then open the dryer door. Pull out the lint filter. The lint filter is located at the front of the dryer's tumbler, and is inserted vertically into the dryer. Gently stroke your hand over the filter to clear the lint, then insert the filter back into the dryer and close the door.
10

Spin the laundry at a higher spin speed in the washing machine before placing the laundry into the dryer to reduce the moisture content.
11

Turn the dryer off and allow at least 30 minutes to pass for the dryer to cool, as excessive heat can cause a drying program malfunction.

Black soot causing whites to be gray

I too have the same problem with my Admiral dryer. Have come to the conclusion that the soot is making all my clothes greyer, but just noticed it with my whites. Took apart my dryer today and first of all found that the outlet below the lint vent was plugged. There is no soot on the outside of the drum or the dryer housing...however there is soot within the metal tube that surrounds the gas burner. Seems the gas is not being burned properly or the plugged lint trap was not letting the burned gases escape??? Laura

The dryer is getting a black soot buidup in dryer that is turning white clothes gray

There are a few things to check here..

Note that from what your describing you dryer should be running hotter than normal also and the burner most likely is being shut off by the high limit thermostat vs the cycle thermostat.

1. Seening soot of any form is a sign that there is an incomplete combustion of the gas. This usually is caused by an air blockage or restriction. Check the following places:

a. The lint filter and the entire area where the lint filter fits.

b. The dryer vent to the wall can be kinked or blocked.

c. The outside flapper vent can have a build up of lint in it that needs cleared.

I think you will find a blockage some where. Just make sure not to use anything sharp when cleaning it out. And a Vacuum crevice tool works great.

If none of the above work repost here and we can go from there.

Black carbon/soot on the door and lint filter of my dryer

I have the same problem with a Maytag Performa gas dryer. My husband took our dryer apart and found that the burner tube which leads from the burner to the back of the dryer was full of soot (which was getting blown back into the dryer drum with the hot air.) We are cleaning it out now but would like to know how to prevent this from recurring in the future.

Black soot in dryer

There are several possible causes: a)  exhaust vent is restricted forcing the lint to enter the dryer shell and overheat and/or be picked up by the blower -- you seem to have inspected this b)  check the hot gas inlet to the drum.. on some dryers, lint buildup can occur in tight spots and it will overheat and char c)  ducting is not intact or leaks allowing lint to leak into the dryer shell -- this will occur over time, and all dryers should be taken apart and cleaned out on a regular basis... also, all ducting should be inspected and sealed as needed d)  verify that the inlet vents to the dryer shell are not blocked and allow adequate air flow to the burner assembly -- natural gas normally won't smoke due to incomplete combustion, but..  likewise, verify the room has adequate ventilation particularly if the utility room or closet is very small,  e)  check the drum drive belt, as it gets old, it will release dust and minute pieces which will be picked up by the blower -- replace if needed... f)  verify that the seals on the drum are still good -- replace as needed g)  as 'washer-tech' advised, do a thorough cleaning and inspection... put it back together with all ducting tight and free flowing
