Question about Canon PIXMA iP4000 InkJet Photo Printer

1 Answer

Can't get ink from new tank into the head area without forcing w/airpressure (blowing into it). Printer prints after this until the ink runs out. This started after using the cleaning setup many times after an ink spill earlier.

From what I am seeing it is very easy to mix up the two black tanks which causes it to keep cycling and using the ink supply.

MPORTANT
• Make sure that the ink tank is inserted in the slot that corresponds to the ink tank’s color. • If you insert it in the wrong slot, perform head refreshing two or three times.

I read this chapter about four times, it is difficult to say the least. I hope this helps, but the only thing I could find on ink being wasted is in the maintenance section.

Blank pages coming out of i850 with new printhead

Alarm / Power light flashes orange 7 times consecutively is a Print head error so it sounds like you did the right thing.

I would reseat the printhead along with each one of the ink cartridges. Make sure that you removed the tape from the bottom of each of the ink cartridges and try it again. After installing the new printhead, you should have run a printhead cleaning cycle immediately after installing.

Issue: Certain colors are missing or no ink prints on the paper
Solution: Install / replace the recommended ink tanks correctly i550 / i850

Untitled Document How to install / replace the ink tanks
The ink tanks suitable for the printer are as follows;

Black Ink Tank BCI-3eBK
Cyan Ink Tank BCI-3eC
Magenta Ink Tank BCI-3eM
Yellow Ink Tank BCI-3eY

Note: There are two ink tank label designs.
Operation procedures are shown with label design A.

labelsa.jpg Replacement Procedure

1. Check that the printer is powered on, and open the front cover. Wait until the print head moves to the center.

2. Remove the empty ink tank by pushing the tab on the ink tank.

Note: When doing this, do not remove the print head. When replacing multiple ink tanks, it is recommended to replace one at a time to avoid inserting them into the wrong slots.
(The image is an example using i850.)

removingtank850.jpg
3. Remove the new ink tank from its package. Pull the orange tape in the direction of the arrow to remove it completely, and remove the shrink-wrap film.

Note: Remove the orange tape completely. If the tape remains, printing may not be performed properly.

removingtape.jpg
Confirm that the orange tape is completely removed from the ink tank, as shown in image 1. If the tape is similar to the sample in image 2, remove the remaining portion of the tape so that it looks like the sample shown in image 1.

orangetape.jpg
(1): Correct

(2): Incorrect (where the arrow indicates)
4. Slowly twist the orange protective cap in the direction that the arrow indicates, and remove it. To avoid ink adhering to your fingers, brace the orange protective cap while removing it.

removecap.jpg

5. Insert the new ink tank to the print head by holding it at a slight angle.

Note: Confirm that the ink tanks are installed in the right order according to the labels on the print head.
inkorder.jpg
6. Press down on the top of the ink tank until a click sound is made.

7. Close the front cover. The next time the printer performs printing, it will automatically start print head cleaning. The power lamp will flash while cleaning is performed. Until cleaning completes, do not perform other operations.

I believe that he is reffering to the waste ink tank where the cartriges stop to the right when not being used. There are two small foam pads over there.
I cleaned mine by opening lid and have carriage run to the left, then I reach in with a q-tip and press down repeatly until q-tips are almost clean. You will need a flashlight to see waht you are doing.

Canon MP530 U052 Error

The dreaded U052 error means that the 'chip' fitted to the Cartridge is not responding .. Canon (like all printer mfgs) makes all it's profit from selling Ink .. so they fit these chips to try to prevent you refilling or using a 'compatible' replacement cartridge

You have to move the chip from the Canon cartridge to the 'compatible' and (it seems) the chips are particularly sensitive to static / damage .. many people end up blowing the chips during the swap over .. or even when fitting the original genuine cartridges to a brand new unit for the first time ...

If the unit is brand new, take it back and demand a replacement ... if you have just swapped over the chip onto a compatible cartridge, you can try buying a genuine Canon cartridge (which will have a new chip) = hopefully that will do the trick

NB. I have seen some suggestions that canon's have a 'Service Mode' that allows you to disable the cartridge chip checking and allow you to print no matter what .. however I've never found any details ... perhaps some-one else has the details ??

Can't print in Black ink

I had the same problem I found this solution to be very effective: * Buy alcohol solution (70% or more). You can find it in any drug store. * Remove both cartridges from the printer head. Unplug the printer head from the printer body. Pour the alcohol into paper towel layer. * put the printer head on the top of wet towel with the face of HEAD touching the towel. * clean the head with the towel and get rid of all the built-up ink on the head. * Pour the alcohol into the printer head container (ink-receptacle area is where the ink cartridge normally sits, notice a small hole where the ink flow into the printer). Do not touch any electronic parts and let it dry over night. * Do step 2-5 again if necessary. * Install the cartridge back to the printer and run several head cleaning maintenance, print nozzle check, make sure to repeat this step until no more dead nozzle shown. It worked for me :0)
