Question about Little Giant 5-ASP, 1/6 HP, 1200 GPH - Submersible Utility Pump w/ Piggybac

1 Answer

Pump turns on and off every couple of minute, need pump to run non-stop

I have a little giant utility/sump pump that I use for my water fountain in my front yard. I had it running last year without any problems. This year I set it up but it only starts up for a couple of minutes and then turns off for a couple of minute, then it turns on again, then off and repeats. Please Help.

Check to make sure the "suction" of the pump is always flooded with water. Maybe the inlet is clogged. The motor may be protecting itself from burnout if there is a low water condition. Does it also have a float switch? If so, maybe the float is bobbing up and down too much from turbulence.

Contacts are bad if you can fis it you will have to go to either a granger store or ele motor store to get them,, make sure they are in in the right direction or it might be easier to change the pump to a new one

it appears you need a new float switch or a new pump wich would be cheaper then replacing the switch, and a warranty with a new pump

My pump is running but not sucking up water

well if possible look into suction screen and see if Impeler is turning , I'll bet not , most of the lil giants come with a easy to remove pump cover (screw) so one can access the pump cavity to remove forign debris , also one can manually rotate impeller with finger (unplugged) to ck for free movement , if its hard to move your pump needs replacement

I am looking for an agent for a Franklin submersible sump pump for a borehole in Centurion.

If you visit their water site along the top you will see 'service' and 'sales'. Depending on what you need select one and follow the screen prompts for a local agent. Their site can be found at:

inside the pump on the motor is a thermal cut out if the motor has over heater from running a long time the cut out pops and it may not pop back in again? its that or there is a motor fault like brushes worn out

Sump pump

The big cylindrical thing at the end of the wire hanging is the switch. I believe it is a mercury switch. Try hitting this a little and see if it stops. Sometimes they get stuck. If this doesn't help, then replace that piece. Hope this helps.

Little Giant stopped working; makes hum noise but wont push wate

Can you take it out of where it is and clean it with vinegar? There may be calcium built up in it. I have one also on my aquarium and when I turn it off sometimes it won't start back up, just humms.. That tells me it's time to clean it.

Little giant pump stopped working

Hi Tom (and Lindsay?),

Ok lets get a little more info,
  1. Plugged in? (Have to ask)
  2. Does it run and not pump?
  3. Does not run?
  4. Tried moving the float switch?
  5. Pull the pump and see if the intakes are clogged
Please comment back with your findings

24HR working pump question

Utility Pumps: Utility pumps draw water through openings that screen out debris. When placing one into a pond, use a pump sock or other enclosure to reduce the amount of cleaning needed. If you use a pump sock, be aware that sock-like screening can cause a dry pump situation. Solids Pumps: These pumps draw water through a large opening and pump small debris through without clogging. For this reason, they can be placed into a pond without prefilters. Note, however, that this type is not safe for ponds with fish, frogs or other aquatic animals
