Macbook Won't Always Shut Down!

I have a black MacBook from June 2008. It doesn't always turn off when I tell it to. It quits everything, then just shows the desktop with the spinning gear until I restart it with Control-Command-PowerButton. Once, when I didin't restart it, it stayed on overnight and drained the battery.

    Thanks for the response!

It made me verify the disk first, and it said it appeared to be OK. Also, I've tried a ton of cache clearing, disk/permissions repairing, and that kind of stuff. I've run Apple Hardware Test and TechTool Deluxe, which both came out clean. Since this issue only happens once or so a month, I can't be sure it's solved for a while. Any other ideas?

    Thanks again,
    Nathan

Click on the hard drive icon, then on Applications, then Disk Utilities. Select the hard drive, the click on repair. This will repair any issues with Mac OS.
If it does not, it may be a hardware problem. I just received mine from Apple repair. Mine would not come out of sleep.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Having problem to shut macbook

Click the Apple logo at the top left hand corner of your screen and select "Force Quit". On the small window that pops up, select the trouble app and click Force Quit. If the app does not close, hold down the power button until the screen goes black. This will not harm your computer (since it's a Mac) and you can boot it back up afterwards.

Hi, I also had this problem on macbook air 2011, I tried everything but all failed. However, once I used up all its battery and left it like that for 2 days. After that, everything turned back to normal, the shift key worked normally again. Hope this will help you.

Sometimes my mac air will not boot up when turned on. The screen simply stays black. Eventually it does boot up. What causes this and should I take it in?

Does it always eventually boot up? If so, I don't think it's a serious problem. Your OS may need to be restored. Do you still have your original install CD? There are detailed instructions on how to do the restore online. If the problem get's worse and it doesn't turn on even after restore, you may have a logic board issue, Here is an Macbook Repair Guide that shows how to open a Macbook. If you want somebody else to do it for you go to Macbook Repair.
