Hi, I just received a Celestron 80mm f5 WA Eq refractor. I like the scope but it seems to have a focuser problem. I noticed that when reversing focuser direction, the image jumps about 20% of a FOV width at 32x. At first I thought I was moving the mount, but on closer inspection in the light, I can actually see the focuser tube "lift up" a bit when I back the tube out after moving it in. This is my first refractor and first R&P focuser (my Dob has a JMI Crayford), but I can't believe this is normal even in an inexpensive scope like this. Opinions very much appreciated!
Sometimes the screws holding the pinion to the rack back out a little and need to be adjusted. You might also want to lube the focuser tube just a little on the outside.

I own the Orion ShortTube 80mm refractor, which is essentially identical to the Celestron, and I've found the focusser to be of extremely good quality...certainly no play in it even at 120x. It sounds like yours either needs adjustment or replacement by the manufacturer.
