Question about Hitachi External 20GB Mini Slim Hard Drive (EXT20G9MU2HIT)

1 Answer

Externals not recognized by computer.

I have 2 external hard drives. One is a Hitachi 20GB which the device manager will recognize but the computer explorer window will not. The other is a 16GB Kingston thumb/flash drive which is recognized by both the Device Manager and the computer explorer window but which I cannot format, or, drag and drop stuff. I am trying to format both for reuse but cannot because they are not recognized for one reason or another. Ideas? Help?

Go to your control panel open up 'administrative tools' Open Computer management, then choose disc management instead of device manager. Make sure that you have the drives pluged in and connected before you do that. All connected drives formatted or not that are in working order should show up under disc management. If they are not showing up they are not compatable. Make sure that they are marked as active and format them if they need to be formatted. Do so by right clicking on the drive in the disc management window.

My WD2500 external hard drive is not showing on my computer

Most of these externals have no drivers. They are set up to plug & play. If you no longer have the instruction manual, you will need to go on the Seagate Mfg site.

The biggest misconception about the externals is that you have to first format them which is outlined in the instruction manual. The formatting takes a few minutes. Once it is completed the drive will be linked to the computer and you will see it in the formatting window and also in My Computer.

When you format the drive you will also be able to choose which letter the drive will be under. Make sure no other device is assigned the same letter.

If you assign the same letter to two different devices, you may have a conflict and your system will not recognize one of them.

External hard drive not accessible

A Hitachi USB external hard drive is a device that acts as portable, removable storage for your personal computer. If you need additional space to house files on your computer but don't want to go to the trouble of installing an internal drive inside the case, a USB external hard drive is your best option. These drives are "plug and play" devices, which means that very little can actually go wrong. If you're having problems, fixing them shouldn't take more than a minute or two.

Check your connections. A USB cable needs to be connecting your Hitachi external hard drive to your computer. Your external hard drive's power cable also needs to be plugged into a functional wall outlet, surge protector, extension cord or power strip. Make sure your Hitachi USB external hard drive is turned to "On." An "On/Off" button is present on the front of the unit. If the indicator light around said button is not illuminated, the drive is "Off" and your computer won't be able to recognize it. Press it to turn it on and then try to access your drive again. Format your hard drive. If your Hitachi USB external hard drive doesn't currently have a file system on it, you won't be able to use it to store data. Open up the "Computer" icon in the "Start" menu. Right-click on your USB external hard drive's icon and click "Format." Click "Start." This will install a file system on your Hitachi USB external hard drive. After this process is finished, you will now be able to use your drive. Restart your computer. Certain models of computers (especially older models) won't recognize new hardware unless your computer boots with the hardware already connected. Leave your USB drive plugged in and restart your computer. Once you do this, your Hitachi USB external hard drive should appear as normal in the "Computer" folder with all of your other drives. Hope this helps.

My Maxtor One Touch III external hard disk has suddenly stopped getting recognized on my laptop. I am using a Windows XP, SP 2 OS. The system is unable to recognize the USB device. Can someone please help?

Check power of HDD, that problem can usually manifest because some of your usb ports can't send enough Volts to your device, restart your machine, check connections, and it should work again as charm :)))

Please rate my solution, thank you :)

I can't see the hd symbol. I have a brand new external 1TB hard disk. Windows xp recognizes the device but it doesn't show the system symbol, thus I can't write on it.

Check the Disk Management console to see if the hard disk is partitioned and formatted.
Right-click My Computer and select Manage in the popup menu.

External hard drive not recognized

Some of the externals have mapping issues in Windows.  Although the TB shows in devices, you may need to remap it (right click on My Computer for mapping options) and in some cases, changing the drive letter will fix your problem.  There's really no 1 definitive solution for these.  If you're unable to fix the problem by remapping or changing the drive letter, you can partition the drive to recover your data.  As far as the slow transfer rate goes, almost all externals are formatted in FAT.  This has issues of its own with safely removing devices and slow transfer rates.  I prefer to format my externals and flash drives in NTSF for more reliability.  Best of luck.

Essential 500GB isn't recognized by XP

What do you have them plugged into?

Make sure they are actually plugged into their power supplies.
(I know it sounds silly, but it's sometimes forgotten.)

Also check the power switch on the back of each drive. Press it to power on the drive.
