Question about Ryobi 30 Cubic Centimeter Curved Shaft Gas Trimmer

1 Answer

Trimmer runs wide open, no matter what setting. Idle srew doesn't help. Starts easy, but can't slow it down.

Not many reason for this......One: your throttle is stuck open (I'm sure you would have found by now)..If not.... Its an air leak between the carb and intake port. The only purpose the carb. serves is to regulate air/fuel mixture and also the rate in which both fuel and air enters the motor thus maintaining consistent RPM stability while at idle all the way through to WOT (wide open throttle) when in operating....The Throttle body has a foil inside which opens and closes allowing air into the motor. The foil opens when throttle (lever/trigger) is applied and allows the air in that is needed to acheive appropriate RPM and power or to lower RPM when not needed. All engines WANT to RUN and the only thing stopping them from running away is the restriction of airflow....So if there is a leak between the Carb and the Intake port, then Carb will then be bypassed and the engine will **** in all the air that it is mechanically capable of through the path of least resistance, unregulated...... This is also extremely harmful to the motor because a "lean" fuel/air mixuture is caused meaning it is drawing in more air and less fuel which causes increased thermal combustion temps. and can burn a hole through pistons

Echo only runs wide open

Your question isn't detail enough such as.

Q: It starts up wide open with the trigger depress fully but when I release the trigger it dies.

A: The carburetor idle jet (Picture A item #27) is dirty/plugged. the carburetor needs to be taken apart and cleaned or it just needs to be turned out a bit to flow fuel or the idle screw that sets the idle speed (Picture B) on the carburetor need to be screwed in to open the flap a bit more. Your carburetor may not be like either of these two carburetors but close enough. If you need to figure out which carburetor you have to locate the idle jet look search for picture of your carburetor and that tells all such as in picture A.

Another couple things. In picture B you see the spring on the throttle shaft that closes the flap to idle. If that area is really dirty the flap could be stuck wide open. Make sure the it is free to open and close. If the chainsaw has had a lot of use the engine could be wore to the point at idle the piston isn't making enough compression for the engine to stay running even if you turn the idle speed screw (Picture B) in as far as you can.

Ryobi s430 will idle but will stall out when throttle opens. This carburetor has one idle adjustment screw and one fuel mixture screw.

Those carbs are a pain. Try arousing the idle screw, turun it to the right, then try to see if it will idle. You will have to tinker with the adjustment screw and the idle screw. Eventually you're gonna need a new carburetor. You can rebuild it, BUT , chances are those cheap carburetors never are the same.

I have a poulan 4218 it starts but has to be wide open to run there is no mid range or idle just wide open.

The carb might need adjusting the adjustment screws my be turned in to far witch is causing it to run wide open and not having slow idle or mid idle

HEDGE TRIMMER IS EASY TO START AND RUNS GREAT AT HIGH SPEED BUT WILL NOT IDLE. ALSO IS SLUGGISH IN RESPONDING TO THROTTLE. Have replaced diaphraghm assemblies and fuel lines

You have two adjustment screws on the carb, one is for adjustment the mix at idle and the other under throttle conditions. You can tune the engine by ear. Refer to your manual for which screw is which. If you don't have it you can figure it out by letting the engine idle and give one of the screws a half turn (CC or CW doesn't matter) if that affects the idle condition readjust that screw back to the original position and proceed to adjust the other screw with the throttle full pressed. You will be able to hear the engine lean out or when it runs too rich, simply listen to the engine for when it starts to rev properly.

Fuel mix and slow/fast running jet ajustment Dolmar sach 119. starts easy wont pull under load.

Set both the high and low speed screws from lightly seated to 1 1/4 turns out. This will give you a rough setting that will allow the saw to start and idle. Set the idle screw to where the chain just stops moving at idle.
With the saw warmed up adjust the low speed screw out until the saw smokes a bit and acceleration is sluggish. Bring the screw in small steps until the hesitation is gone from the acceleration...you may need to adjust the idle again after this.
Now hold the throttle wide open and while it is wide open adjust the high speed screw in until the noise becomes smooth and the saw "sings". Do not leave it at this setting as it will burn down in short order. Once the saw is singing back the screw out until you can hear the saw's tone "roughen"....then back the screw out a tad more for good power / fuel under load.
That's it in a nutshell...here's a good link also...

Just replaced the carb, fuel lines, filter and gasket that goes between the carb and cylinder wall. All brand new parts. I believe lines are connected correctly. Now the engine runs like it is on full...

I don't think it has anything to do with the high/low settings, but in case was the carb pre adjusted or did you adjust them yourself. Did you put the throttle cable in the right hole on the throttle plate if there is more than one. Check the idle speed screw (not the low needle) to make sure it is not causing this. Look to make sure the throttle butterfly is not binding in the open position or that the throttle cable itself is the culprit. Maybe your gasket moved when re-installing causing plate to stay open. I suggest removing carb and inspecting for any of these problems. Maybe there is something wrong with your new carb! I hope this helps out. Happy to answer any questions.

How do you set the carb screws on a stihl d12 avt chainsaw? how many turns for high an low?//?????

I would start by opening each 1 turn. Then 1/2 turn until I got it running. While running, set the low by turning the screw out until the saw starts to slow down. Then turn in until the same thing happens. Set the screw about 1/2 way in between. Do the same with the high but do it while running at a higher RPM. Do not run it wide open unless you have the chain in wood, cutting. Good luck...Lee

Ryobi 720r trimmer starts ok but stalls when the

The carburator needs to be adjusted a little, thin our your mixture screw when the trimmer is warmed up and idling. Well how do you get it to idle? I usually have to play with the choke lever with the throttle wide open going from choke to partial choke as needed to keep it running. Adjusting can be tricky, you need a small screwdriver. Screw all the way in then back out 3 to 3.5 turns. this should get you close. Adjust idle as needed.

TUNING THE CARBURETTER

Start with the L or low speed screw at one turn and the H or high speed screw at two turns. To get good responce from idle play with the low speed screw. For top end engine peaking use the high speed screw. Hold the throttle wide open and turn the screw either way till you peak out the RPM'S . Hope this will be helpful. Donnyb60
