Hello list1016:

Depending on the OEM and Model Number of the Carburetor, it Sounds like the Fuel Filter Requires Changing, the Primer Check Valve is Stuck and Stopping the Primer from Operating, the Carburetor Filter/Screen is Restricted or the Carburetor Metering Jet is Stuck.
For the Fuel Filter;
The Following is a Basic Instruction File I made for Replacing the Fuel Lines and the Filter on Chain Saws and Trimmers. Any Input is Appreciated.
>>The Fuel Line is Pushed and Pulled (I Use Long Needle Nose Pliers) Through the Small Hole Until the Hose is Out the Fill Hole about a 1/2".
>>You can Also Use a Coat Hanger with a Small J at the End to Hook the Filter in the Tank and Pull the Filter and Hose (if Detached from the Carburetor) Out the Tank Fill Hole Enough to Replace the Filter.
>>Then Attach the Filter and Pull the Hose Back Until the Filter Lays at the Bottom of the Tank Just Below the Fill Hole (or so it is in the Bottom of the Tank and will Rest in the Fuel Mix when Turned at Common Angles the Unit May be Turned to During Operation.
>>**Hint: Use Plenty of Spray Lubrication at the Small Hole as you are Feeding in the Hose. It Slides Easier.**
For the Other Possible Causes, Soak and Clean the Carburetor.
>>The Following is a Basic File I Made for Cleaning Carburetors. Any Input is Appreciated. Even though the Carburetor LooksClean, the Internal Passages May be Restricted with Varnish that GasCauses to Build Up over Time.
>>Spray Cleaners Remove this Varnish in Layers, so Soaking is the Only Sure Way to Remove ALL this Varnish.
>>I have Found that Most People can Use a Breakdown/IPL and Disassemble the Carburetor Enough for Proper Cleaning.
>>Remove Any Adjustment Screws that Go Into the CarburetorBody. The Welch Plugs Do Not have to be Removed.
>>If you are Able to Remove and Disassemble the Carburetor and Keep the Gaskets Intact, then Usually these Gaskets can be Reused. The Only Parts you May Need to Replace are the Needle Valve and Metering Pump Diaphram.
>>If you Order a Kit, then Replace All the Old Components with he New Ones in the Kit even if the Old Parts Look Good.
>>Once Disassembled, then Soak the Carburetor Body and Parts in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts.
>>Once the Carburetor and Parts are in the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidental Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air.
>>***(Do Not Use High Pressure Air for the Zama Carburetors, they have Check Valves for the Primer and these
re Usually Blown Out of the Carburetor if Not Careful. Allow the Zama Carburetor to Set on a Drip Pan and Dry)***.
>>****All the Carburetor Adjustments are the Same for LawnMower and Trimmers.
>>If the Main Air and Idle Air Mixture Screws are Side by Side on the Side of the Carburetor, then the Idle Air is Nearest the Engine.
>>****Turn the Idle Air and Main Air Mixture Screws In Until SNUG **Do Not Jam** Then Reverse Both Screws 1 1/2 Turns. Holding the Throttle Full Open, Start the Engine. Turn the Main
ir Mixture Screw Clockwise Until Proper Revs are Obtained. Occasionally you May have to Turn this Counter Clockwise to Achieve the Proper Revs. Now Allow the Engine to Idle. Set the Engine Idle Screw (Not Idle Air) so the Engine will Stay Running if Required. Now Set the Idle Air Mixture Screw so there is No Hesitation when Throttling from Idle to Full Throttle. Reset the Engine Idle if Required.****
>>If you have Questions, Please Ask. The links above Provide Good Directions on Cleaning the Carburetor. Make sure you use an Compressed Air to Blow through all the Carburetor Passages to make sure they are Clear.

Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Be Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck

What would cause a weedeater not to run when its getting gas to the primer bulb

if it wont run make sure the spark plug is good, clean, and not covered in fuel. an drowned plug is a sign of a bad carburetor. it may need the carburetor taken apart and cleaned real good. possibly a new diaphragm, they are cheap. you tube has many videos on how to do this. hope this helps you.

I cant get it to start. The primer bulb wont refill with gas

The bulb pulls fuel from the carb into the bulb and back to the tank, if the bulb does not fill it is because there is a fuel blockage, either in the fuel filter in the tank, or the screen in the carb itself.

Has been sitting for a few years.. cleaned carb and chedcked settings on H and L screws.. still wont start.. replaced fuel lines and primer bulb.. and its a mac 3227 weedeater.. cranks but doesnt start,...

siphon out the old fuel and put brand new fuel in the tank. Change the air filter even if it looks ok. Put in a new spark plug. Then get a can of starter fluid and an assistant. Squirt some starter fluid into the air intake and start it up. have your assistant continue to spray the starter fluid for a minute or so until it runs on its own. J.

My weedeater lawn edger wont start. I get no gas in the primer bulb, but has fuel in both the main line and the return line. I blew out the fuel fliter and both lines but still no fuel in the primer...

There may be a malfunction in the check valves in the primer base assembly. Before attempting to get a new assembly, take the retaining screws at the bulb off, remove the bulb and spray the assembly liberally with WD-40 or an equivalent light lubricant. Sometimes this will free the check valves as they only let fuel flow one way and there are 2 of them in the primer base.
Do not use strong solvents, do not ever soak, and never use high PSI compressed air on these carbs. Sometimes, when the check valves in the primer base go bad, the carb floods and the reason is unclear. Zama doesn't list this as a reason for their carbs flooding, but they can. You may wish to view a parts breakdown list for your specific carb. You will need to know the type (stamped in side of carb body) and the model (stenciled in side of carb body). It will be something like a C1U type and a W-18A mode...thus its a C1U-W18A Zama carb. Here is a link to get you started.

Will not start

That seems to imply that the check valves in the primer pump and in the fuel pump section of the carburetor are bad or the air pressure just forced by the valves. The line without the filter is the tank return line from the primer pump. The primer pump is supposed to pull fuel from the fuel filter into the carburetor flooding all spaces within it it, then passing out to the primer pump and from there, back into the tank. Does the primer bulb fill with fuel after several pumps? The first try may take longer because you forced all of the fuel out of the carburetor with the air pressure. Make sure all of the carburetor fasteners are tight. It's possible that you have injured the diaphragm in the carburetor lower chamber when you blew air into the line. Go to: www.drystacked.com for a 12 page article on Walbro carburetor theory and troubleshooting. Make sure the spark plug gap is set at 0.020". Hope some of this helps!

I re-tubed my trimmer and now the bulb won't prime

I had exactly the same problem. On my weedeater, there is a screen in the carb under the primer bulb that was dirty from the fuel line falling apart. After replacing the fuel line AND cleaning the screen, the primer bulb will move fuel and it runs great.

Stihl weed eater runs 2min. then stop

Stihl weedeater was running and stopped suddenly. Put in a new fuel filter and cleaner air filter with soap and water. Checked spark plug and it appeared fine. Started the weedeater, ran for a second or so and stopped. Spark plug wasn't gas fouled. Could it be the carburetor needing new diaphram gasket and spring.
