There is a valve in the top of the trans that has unscrewed out of the hydro, your dealer has the special socket to put it back in the housing, There is one for forward and one for reverse in the gemini trans.

Yes it is the transmission. A Mower shop will charge you about $225 to fix.. I order parts online and fixed mine for $90. Transmission consist of 3 gears which turns the rear wheels to self-propel.

My mower just stopped while mowing the other day. transmission barely holds drive and wont reverse at all.

Have you checked the belt? If it has bad spots on it or is stretched out , it should be replaced. Sounds like it's slipping on the pulleys and won't pull because of a bad belt. That's the first thing I'd check. The key on the crankshaft, (where the pulley is held on). It could also be sheared off and letting the pulley slip on the crankshaft and not pull.

Self propel always engaged

you may have lost the spring that pulls the transmission drive belt down or have the cable adjuster too tight.word of caution here, the cable goes thru the engagement lever and if you overtighten it the lever will crack or break. if it does the complete transmission will have to be replaced.seems they dont make the lever avalible seperate.

Hard to shifet my poulan pro and wont go into reverse

Try loosening the belt tension to the transmission a little bit. Some of these are just stiff and you have to slip the clutch a little to rock them into gear.

Self propel will go foward, but will not reverse. Seems like handle is all the way extended.

There is a cable that connects to the handle and goes down to the powerdrive transmission. It is visible at the actuator arm on the drive if you look at the bottom of the handle where it pivots on the main housing. It will be on the right hand side, front corner of the handle bottom. You should be able to see the cable connected to the arm of the drive and will move back and forth with the top handle. Sometimes, they break at this connection. The cable may be frayed and broken, or the acuator arm may be broken where the cable connects.
This could also be a simple worn belt problem. The roller is always rotating in a direction that pulls the machine forward and if the belt is worn, the roller will turn sluggishly but still enough to pull forward, but the belt also drives the transmission and a worn belt will not have the capacity to overcome the forces involved to propel the machine backwards. Always change the belt(s) yearly.(on average)
