This refrigerator is clean as food is not stored in it on a regular basis. There are 7 families who share this vacation home and it is cleaned after each use by a professional service (same individual cleans). We arrived today to find the house temperature at 35 degrees (cold snap!) and outside temps were about 10 degrees. I suspect the temps have been this way for at most 1-2 days. It smells like a very strong men's cologne and is extremely bad. Help! Not sure what to do. We put our food in finally but am not sure it should stay if this is a gas leak or???
SOURCE: Refrigerator Smell
Is the problem more in the freezer than the fridge section. If it is it is possible that on a defrost cycle the heaters which warm the coil may have warped and ar heating something they shouldnt. Another possibility is if there is something in the condensate tray (where the water collects) or something touching the compressor which runs very hot, or even the compressor relay if it is a 'plastic' smell. Smells are notoriously bad things to trace as engineers normally turn up when the smell is either gone or so faint as to not to detect. All I can suggest is trying to narrow the search area as much as you can and hopefully youll find it. Hope this is of some help.
SOURCE: odor that smells like gas going from the refrigerator
Mold and mildew can cause problems like this. It is even possible that a small animal may have invaded your home and gotten into the box somehow. Cleaning the inside of the box with a dilute bleach solution may help. For continuing odor absorption, place an open container, say a 1/4 cup, of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) in the compartment. Change as often as once a week. The powder will absorb the odor.

Replace your thermostat and will work like new again
SOURCE: Kenmore side-by-side has CHEMICAL SMELL ODOR inside.
You have a freon leak. With this only being 5 years old, iot's probably worth repairing, unless you are just able to buy a new one. I would have a local tech come out and check it before tossing it. I hope this answers your question and gives you some resolution. I hope to work with you again, so please record our name, email and phone number for future needs. Have a great evening!
SOURCE: My refrigerator has a strange metal/chemical smell...
Hello - did you ever figure out the metal/chemical smell problem? I seem to be having the same problem in my refrigerator/freezer. It is a side-by-side unit. We were gone over the Labor Day weekend for a few days and when we came back the unit has a metal/iron smell coming from it. Not sure what it could be.
Please let me know if you have any ideas.
