Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

Ink cartridge error reading

I have a Lexmark 3550 and I needed a new color ink cartridge so I bought one. When I put it in, it kept giving the message "right cartridge missing" over and over again. I thought it was the cartridge so I took it back to the store and exchanged it for another new one. Now I am getting the same message again so its not the cartridge. What could it be? I've even cleaned the contacts thinking that might solve the problem.

Varify that you are using actual Lexmark brand ink cartridge, and not a remanufatured (generic or store brand cartridge).

Changing ink cartridge

  • Here is an instruction set I found at
  • Step 1 Press the "Power" button to turn on your Lexmark X2500 3-in-1 printer.
  • Step 2 Open the top portion of the printer to reveal the ink cartridges.
  • Step 3 Lift the gray plastic cover on the left. Remove the empty black #28 ink cartridge. Next, lift the purple plastic cover on the right and remove the empty color #29 ink cartridge.
  • Step 4 Remove the new black #28 ink refill cartridge from its packaging. Tear the protective strip of paper from the cartridge's sensor. Now, remove the new color #29 ink refill cartridge from its packaging and tear the protective strip of paper from the cartridge's sensor.
  • Step 5 Turn the cartridges so that you can read the label. This is the way the cartridges should face when being put into the printer.
  • Step 6 Slide the black #28 cartridge into the slot on the left side and push it down. Slide the color #29 cartridge into the slot on the right side and push down.
  • Step 7 Push the gray plastic cover down over the #28 cartridge until it clicks closed. Push the purple plastic cover down over the #29 cartridge until it clicks closed.
  • Step 8 Close the top portion of the printer. Your new ink cartridges are installed, and your printer is ready to use.

The error is telling you that the color or black cartridge is missing. It's not recognizing one of your cartridges, most probably the new black cartridge. Here's a link to the Lexmark website to guide you on what to do with that problem.

Put a new color ink cartridges kepts coming up empty

You should take it back and exchange it or read on below.
Most modern cartridges have an ink level chip built on to them.
Should the level drop below 25% then most of these chips lock up and will not reset.
Re-filling them will have no effect
If you are lucky you should be able to find either a chip resetter around on the internet
Even better empty cartridges that never need to be reset.
The second option is my preference
I realise these are not for your specific printer but there are others listed on both those sites as well

    Ink cartridge problem

    Complete the following instructions:
    1. Power off your All-in-One.
    2. Use both hands to lift up the scanner unit until the scanner support holds it open.
    3. Turn the All-in-One on. The print cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position, unless the All-in-One is busy.
    4. Remove the color print cartridge.
    5. Lower the scanner unit until it is completely closed.
    6. If the error message reappears, replace the black print cartridge with a new print cartridge.
If it does not repeat steps 1-3 and then go to step 7.
    7. Reinstall the color cartridge and remove the black print cartridge.
    8. Lower the scanner unit until it is completely closed.
    9. If the error message occurs again, replace the color cartridge.
    10. If an error message reappears, repeat steps 1-3 and reinstall both print cartridges.
    11. Lower the scanner unit until it is completely closed.
    12. If you receive the error message again, replace both cartridges.

    Cartridge error

How I solved this problem was, I took out the color cartridge (which seem to be the one giving the error message) and worked only with the black ink (and chose print black and white )

My color ink cartridge had been refilled at Walgreens. The Black ink cartridge is an original Lexmark
